Camping Etiquette

Recommended Posts

A group of friends of mine, and I, have been going to the same lake, and camped on the same island for over 15 years now for opener. Lately, the lake (Boulder Lake) has been busier on opener then in years past. Because of this, we have been going up a few days before opener (for the past several years) and pitched a tent on the island to 'reserve' the island. We always take Friday off anyway, so chances are the island would be available when we arive mid-morining Friday, but we didn't want to take any chances.

Well, this year I get a call from the resort on the lake stating someone pitched a tent on the island last week, 'reserving' it.

Well I guess we kinda made our own bed...but I think that is going too far!

That's pretty slack and selfish and I can believe it.

We camped at a Mille Lacs state park last fall. When we got to our assigned spot, it was taken and you could see that the squatter had changed the number on the post card.

We were lucky to get a campsite that night because there had been a lot of non-reservation traffic come and take up spots while we were trying to get it figured out.

You can't go anywhere anymore where people don't think the rules apply to them.

I hate to say it, but you got beat at your own game. I'm sure someone in the past was "put out" by you pitching a tent early even though you weren't staying in it. These may be those same people who you upset in the past. The old saying "what comes around goes around" comes to mind. I'm not trying to be a jerk, just saying you set the precedence by pitching a tent early.

IFallsRon, what camp was it? I would think the park office would have record on who is in what spot.

It was Kathio. We go there several times during the year.

On the night in question, there was a couple old babes working the counter who didn't seem too experienced with the process. I could have been a Dick but it was nearly dark and we just wanted a site and to get set up.

It seems we have trouble there every year. The bald guy in charge has an attitude.

IFallsRon,

You bey chance know how the group site on the Rum River is at Kathio SP. I have it reserved for Memorial....but have never seen it before. I guess it is near the boat launch to the Rum, and I think it is on the Rum river and about 100 ft off the road..but thats all I got....

just curious of you have seen it at all?

Bottom Feeder: It sounds like your trick worked well for the other group. How many times did that other group take off early, only to find the site occupied with your tent? I don't think pitching a tent on a site to hold it is called camping. Just like sneaking out a week before season to put up a deer stand and "reserving" your shooting lanes is not hunting.

311Hemi: The group site is near the canoe landing on the River. If Ifalls remembers horses, that was the horse camp by the trail center. According to the HSOforum, there are two group areas near the river. A smaller one for up to 15 people about 100 feet from the parking lot. A larger one for up to 45 people about 100 yards from the lot. Both are tent only areas with a pit toilet and hand pump for water. I only remember one site and it was nicely wooded.

it is illegal to put up a tent and leave it to "reserve" a site. we ran into this on vermilion last year and talked to the warden about it. he came and took the tent and told us if the people who left it came back to get their name because he wanted to have a word with them. what you expierienced is a perfect example as to why it should be illegal. otherwise you would have people leaving their tent set up all summer to reserve the site for their days off. we always have some one go up early and stay in the site if we want to reserve it. there is no other way to do it since you cant legally reserve them. if i found your tent set up on a site i wanted to use you would not be happy when you got there and i was all setup in the site and the warden was writting you a ticket.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
