Honey Burns for Bear

Recommended Posts

Anyone else use a honey burn to attract bear?

I have used a small butane stove in the past.
This year I used a can of sterno, for the sake of light weight and portability. However, My honey burned up right away without a lot of white smoke. It lasted for only 5-7 minutes.

If you have burned honey, can you tell me how long the burn (white smoke) lasted?
Also, what did you use for a heat source.

I am looking for better ideas to keep it smoking for longer periods of time.

Can anyone give me a hand here?

Thanks, fishfanatic

Thinking about this a little more I might try putting the honey in a smaller can above the burner with a little hole in it to dribble out in to the burner. This will give you a constant supply for a longer period of time. As long as it did not get too hot it would probably be at the right rate to smoke for quite some time.

I used the single burner camp stove with the propane tank. The honey does smoke up well but if it gets too hot it bursts in to flames.

I use a larger can with a heavy gauge wire that is longer too so you do not burn yourself.

Try punching a couple of vent holes about a 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the can on the sides. This will allow the smoke to draw better. It is a short lasting thing that I use when I am placing the bait. I keep dripping some in the bottom and then go back in a minute and do it again. Then I put it out and either hunt or leave if the season is not open.

Just my .02

We’ve actually tried it a couple different ways. I usually clear a space on the ground and make a shallow pit for the sterno then I set a large coffee can over it and pour in a whole bottle of honey. It takes about 20 minutes or so to really get smoking but then it smokes real good for about an hour.

The other option requires a little construction but then you can hang it in the tree next to you and keep adding honey as you need it.

Take a large coffee can set your sterno in the bottom. A couple inch above the sterno drill 3 sets of holes across from each other so you can run a piece of wire through them making kind of a grill rack(a wire coat hanger cut to length works great). Drill a couple more holes near the top of the coffee can and take another piece of wire to create a handle. Also drill a few hole around the bottom edge of the can for air flow. Then just set a tall soup can on the rack and burn away. You don’t want to put too much in but you can keep adding small amounts as you need it.

I just didn’t like messing around with it so I usually used the first method.

Good luck
