Small Game Hunting?

Recommended Posts

Welcome to fm, good question. First make sure you have your gun safety certificate. That said, I'd suggest knocking on some doors asking to squirrel hunt. I'd bet there aren't many landowners who get asked the question and not many who would care as long as your safe. It's a lot of fun, challenging, and exciting. I hadn't done it for years until last year and my nephew and I went out and had a great time. Anywhere down by burnsville with some woods will hold squirrels.

bump is used to get the thread back to the top for more replys say as ttt ( to the top ) as far as a cheap starter gun a .22 is ok if ur a good shot. i use either a .410 or my 20 ga with 6 or 4 shot in heavy game loads. just be sure not to push the shots past 25 yards even with a 20 ga i try not to take long shots. work on your stalking skills and being steathy dont get frustraded if you miss or spook them, squirrels and plentiful and you will get many oppurtunitys if you are paitent. to hunt them just walk slowly. stopping every 50 yards or so to watch for them. listen and you will hear them chattering or scurrying in the leaves.

I took my 6yr. old little girl out squirrel hunting for a couple of hours on Saturday. We shot 6 of them in a couple of hours. it's real handy having her along. When we spot a squirrel and it sneaks around the backside of the tree, she knows exactly what to do. She just starts walking around the tree until the squirrel comes around to my side where I can get a good shot. One of them nearly landed on her as it fell to the ground. I use a Savage mod. 24. it is an over/under with a .22 on top and a .410 on the bottom. Most of the time, I can get them with the .22. She thinks it's a lot of fun and we have good "quality time" doing it.
