Blizzard coming, where to hunt?

Recommended Posts

Hey all:

I'm hunting the last day of the season tomorrow in a forecast blizzard up in Ely. I'll be hunting the Echo Trail, close to where I got my 8-pointer on opener, trying to get a doe in the freezer on the last day.

My plan is, with 6 to 12 inches of snow starting tonight and strong north winds tomorrow, to try to strike a deer trail still visible in the fresh snow (it'll be snowing all day tomorrow, too), and follow it until I find bedding deer. I've done this before with some success (and with a bow, believe it or not).

I expect most deer will bed almost all day tomorrow, either in some of the heavy thick young pines that come in after logging (those 20-year-old pines are thick as porcupine quills and offer great wind-breaks) or on the lee side of rocky ridges. The .308 carbine with open sights should be just fine, with such poor visibility anyway.

Any thoughts?

I'll check this before I head out in the morning. And thanks for anyone who replies.

Good luck ST! Sound like fun! Deep snow, bedded deer, maybe a few bucks moving.... Hit any areas that are out of the wind, cedar thickets, swamps, etc. I'm debating whether I want to go bowhunting tomorrow, the deer could still be moving but if I hit one in the blowing snow, any blood trail may be covered in a hurry.

Good luck to you!

I will be out trying to kick them out of bed myself. I have left my hunting land alone since opening weekend and all the other land around me is private and receives a decent amount of pressure... with any luck I will have more deer than usual hiding out.. Its defenately worth a try. I have 2 tags to fill.

For me, if its brown, its down. The freezer needs filled.

The best of luck to everyone going out tomorrow.

I hope it snows! We had to hunt in rain, freezing rain, and sleet, here in SE MN today.

Probably no standing corn in your neck of the woods, But if there is, work it, slowly walking threw and checking for bedded deer in between the rows, or making a drive thru it to your shooters, will provide success. I have had some real easy shots doing this during heavy snows. Usally have to whistle at them, to get them to even notice your standing there ready to shoot. There is about 30 acres still standing where we hunt, and we didn't touch it today. But Sunday.....

Good luck! And I hope I can shot at something other than yotes this time.

Corn ??? What is that?

Oh yeah .... I seen some of that stuff in august about 60 miles south of here.

Nothing but hay fields here. I'll be trying to focus my attention to the balsams on the edge of the low land (swamp).... right next to all that dogwood the deer have been munching on (my profits). Maybe, just maybe someone on land near by might be organizing last day drives and possibly push a deer or 2 my way.

The snow started falling around sunset .. before that the ground was bare .. any tracks are worth following, with any luck, they will lead into areas I can see more than 20 feet without crawling on my hands and knee's.

The good ol' .44 rifle with 240 grain hollowpoint bullets should be just enough to knock all the brush out of the way....
