Remember the days when nobody knew what a Marcum was until they came to HSO?

I do

The smartphone flasher has nothing to do with Apple or Microsoft and everything to do with a application developer with vision, fortitude, and capital. Very much like the guys that first took SONAR and put it in a green box.

Was not going to comment on this but here goes. Our major supplier up here completely sold out of vexilar and is still sitting on a ton of Marcum high tec product they can't give them away . Most guys couldn't keep them running up here with program , battery issues etc. Funny they still offer the models 1 3 and 5 old tec ? My two cents and thats not worth much nowdays.

I will welcome any new technology that will make fishing better and put some downward pricing on the old technology. Somebody needs to explain to me why every other technology price goes down but the entry level units for Vexilar, Hummingbird and Marcum still are at 300 dollars list. I have a Vexilar FL-8, it works great but I picked up a used Vexilar SLT-8 and the difference in technology is essentially nothing but somehow the price point does not move.

I am not going to move from my FL-8 anytime soon but chuckle at those who do not think that over time digital is not going to replace the current mechanical devices. I remember growing up and listening to people say fuel injection was a fad. Not to mention the 'I would never buy a 4 stroke boat engine'

Dtro is probably right somebody is going to figure out how to link a sophisticated depth finder to a phone or tablet. Us old guys might not buy it but the younger ones will. Like it or not the younger ones will eventually drive the market. I mean I have an FL-8, it works for me and I probably will not buy a new one for 10 years.

Those in the depth finder market are going to have to appeal to the younger generation for a large percentage of their growth. Yeah I know this board is full of people that have to have the latest and greatest but you see just as many people who post about having Brand x for 10 years and how happy they are with it.

When is fishing not for fun? It should never not be for fun.

Just my terminology to differentiate between fishing for a check and fishing for free. They're both FUN...just a little different motivation and goals for each.

That's why I use the crescent wrench to push the button on my LX-7 to switch the beams wink

EXACTLY! Multi-beam 'ducers are SO "un-necessary" that all the major manufacturers offer them. smirk They're not unique to Vexilar at all.

What happens when Apple, Android, or MS ends today? Or becomes obsolete?

Your limited to hardware and software capabilities created by someone else. The smartphone market is dominated currently by platforms such as Apple iOS, Android, etc and has compatibility issues over a wide range of phone mfg products. This is a strong reason why I see no reason for Marcum or Vexilar to go to the smartphone market with a generic sonar product. No matter how good your own product is its relying on someone else's technology which bars advancement as well as profits no matter how great your own vision.

But why? However the idea may work for a simple primitive fish finder with features like a Marcum Showdown. The only advantage here is if there is one is portability. I would not want to sit down and stare at a 3"-4" screen all day. Smartphones dont operate very well in very cold climates if you havent already noticed.

Bells and whistles as you call them are "add-ons"

When it comes down to over-all performance of just the flasher and the transducer itself I love my vex. Perfect balance of power and performance, battery life is outstanding! Ask some of the serious hardcore tournament ice fishermen out there, ask why they use a vexilar! And then come back with your rhetoric smile

Who said anything about Vexilar or Marcum or Lowrance or Humminbird?

Prior to 2001 we hadn't heard of Navionics...

Now we all use it on our phone.

I'm not even necessarily saying it has to be a flasher to be game changer. Think about how we use our phones on the ice and I would say it is the biggest difference in the last 10 years.

My point was that since the FL8 not a whole lot has changed.

Navionics is just software running on simple hardware as to reason why it has adapted to so well to the smartphone platforms. A GPS and an LCD screen reading data from a chip or program on a handheld device. I dont really consider this a game changer but convenience as GPS handheld devices have been around for a while. Now add sonar imaging to this and I will be all on board with you...

That's great! I feel the same way about my other branded flasher. wink

In the end it all comes down to if you see it, you believe in it, you will use it. Then its the best for you. Regardless of bells & whistles...

Mine is better than yours!

No, mine is better than yours!

C'mon, really? We all have our personal favorite, and that is where we stand on the ice electronics. They all work, it's just a matter of finding one that you like and can afford!

"Can't we all just get along?!"

LOL
