Opening Weekend?

Well, how did you do on opener for grouse? I did not make it out but will be out in the next week or two. Kind of warm out this last weekend!

Moby1 and I were able to find a few. We saw 5 and knocked down 4, darn near right off the bat like 20mins into the morning but nothing after that. Which personally was pretty darn good for me considering I saw only one last season and missed.

I did not miss at all this weekend. But, I only hunted for about 5 hours from 9-2 with a new dog and didn't have any flushes.

I walked about 30 miles and only saw one bird!!! at least i got it so the new pup could see what were looking for!!

Two of us hunted near Orr. Saw 5 birds and got three. Got those at 6 pm. Sat. on edge of swamp. Not very many hunters around.

Hunted on Saturday from about 5 to sunset, flushed 5 birds and didn't see one of them. It was impossible with all the leaves still on the trees, but it sure felt great to get out. I think hunting should be pretty decent this fall even though reports say the grouse are down, but I guess we'll wait and see.

Worked from 12am to 11am Saturday morning. Went to bed at 12pm Saturday and dreamed about walking through the woods north of Crosby and bagging 5 for 5 with my new Springer. Woke up at 5pm, realized I'm a much better shot in my dreams than in reality, ate dinner, and went back to work at 10pm.......you know the rest.

WOW the stories sound familiar. My buddy and I got 3 by 9:30 Sat but only pushed about 5 birds. Nothing the rest of the day. Sun morning flushed about 3 and got none. Hunted many areas over about 30 miles over the weekend and saw hardly anything where we had seen birds just last year. Saw no road birds. All birds we flushed and shot were in the brush and we had to work for them. I'm really dissapointed but that's grouse hunting. Looks like the low drumming counts were accurate. I'm cancelling my next planned trip in that area. Maybe I'll go somewhere else if I hear good things or maybe I'll just do something else.

Report from Paul Bunyan State Forest: windy, hot, leafy and quiet. Hunted 2 hours saturday AM with a very experienced dog in proven cover, didn't see or hear a bird. Not many shots in the surrounding woods. Fished and put wood up the rest of the weekend. It ain't lookin' promising boys.

My neighbor and I hunted around Mora on Sunday. Didn't see or hear any birds. Did notice that the blackberries were ripe and still on many of the bushes. Brought my 1 year old GSP/lab. 1st time in the "real" woods. She did great. Stayed between 10-15 yards of us an really worked the trail. When we were all done and loading up, I called for the dog. She came running up covered in what I thought was mud. I went to the truck and grabbed an old towel to dry her off....it wasn't mud....it was decaying SKUNK!! Someone must have shot these things a few months ago. The dog rolled in the decaying pile of skunk pudding. My neighbor started dry heaving. Nedless to say, she rode in the back of the truck on the way home. After 2 baths, the smell was finally gone. Hope she doesn't do that again. Good luck everyone for the rest of the season.

We shot 2 for the entire group and only heard a few others. Pretty slow and dang hot out.

3 guys, 2 dogs, hunted saturday and sunday for a combined total of 10 hours in the woods. End result: 2 grouse. Still nice to be in the woods again and once the leaves start dropping it should get a little better...
