Cut Pad on my GSP

I was out a week ago and my GSP cut one of his pads on his front foot. Called the Vet and he stiched it up bet the stiches ripped out about 3 days to soon. I don't want to put the dog through the pain of the stiches again because he was not him self for days. The vet told me that they may not close back up anyway. Just wondering if anyone out there has had this happen before?

Had a cut pad on a lab once, took a long time to heal up. Treated with triple antibiotic ointment at first, then used that liquid bandage stuff.

The liquid bandage works pretty good!

When it dries its like a new layer of skin and it last quite a while. It holds it together and protects!

I would give it a try! Just dont let you dog lick it all off before it dries.

And you will probably have to apply every few days if its a deep tear it does wear off but I think it helps!

My GSP cut her pad very badly only the 2nd weekend into the pheasant opener. She hasn't left the yard to hunt since then. She has been to the vet every 2 weeks for more antibiotics since the cut has not healed completely yet. He did not stich it. The reson for it was that there was so much dirt and grass packed into the wound, that he wanted it to be able to drain since it was also infected by the time we got home and got her to the vet. It is doing well now, but there is still a hole where the cut was. It is about 1/2 the size of a pencil eraser around nearly 3/8" deep. Just yeterday, the vet suggested we get a boot for the foot and go after it with better topical medication and a cotton wrap. My dog is outside all day, and she keeps gettig foreign bodies in that hole and it doesn't heal. The vet told me that there has been lots of cut pads this year mostly because of how dry it was in Sept. and Oct.

Hey thanks for all the info. I did order a couple of dog booties from a link that I found on one of the other posts www.dogbooties.com nice choice of boots and quite affordable as well. Hopefully that will work. I amd planning a trip to Canby hunting this weekend the best part of that is that my dad and I go out there with my vet so we should be in good hands if any thing happens. I plan on wraping his paw and putting the boot over it. My GSP is a house dog so is laying on the couch all day while I am at work. I have limited his out side time so to keep the wound clean. Appears to be working. It is healing up and forming a nice new layer of skin. I guess we will have to see how it turns out. Thanks again.

I understand what your going through, but there is a lot of hope. I had the same problem with my lab, only she cut it on an ice auger blade and cut half of her back pad off. the blood was everywhere and I was nervous as he11! I did get her into the vet right away and he told me that stiches wouldn't hold which in your case was true. All we did was clean the pad really really really good and put on some healing ointment. We wrapped her foot with some elastic sticky wrap and it stayed really good for about 3 days. The wrap can be found in the pharmacy section of any drug store. Put the sticky side towards the fur, but make sure you have a gauze pad under to cut. This will help the healing and won't pull off the scab when you change wraps. The good news is the healing only took about 2 weeks, the bad news is the Minn. season is over then. I would like to hear how things turn out. Good Luck.

A couple of drops of superglue works well on a torn pad. Clean and disinfect the cut first, then glue and bottie.

Hey guys thanks again for the info. I am planning to hunt him this weekend. It appears to be healing pretty good so far. My Vet is going to Canby with us and said he would bring what ever it would take to take care of it if something happend again. And bring whatever it would take to prevent it from happening again. I know its probably a bit early to hunt him but next weekend is shot I have to go to St. Cloud for the Beumer Family Christmas party at the Holiday Inn. So there goes the last weekend hunting. I may have a chance to get out this week I hope if his paw can handle it. Thanks again guys.
