Good Morning!

Recommended Posts

I had to escape from the Getting Started Thread so came here.  So there is a Swingers Club AND a Nudist Camp in Andover.  So LL, what Club does Reiny bring his extra sausages to?  We might have to go check on our buddy.  Or you may have to. :D  I have the day off so having another cup of coffee with a shot of honey in it.  Tastes great.  Looks like a big snow event is likely to enter the area here aroung 11:00 am today.  I might take my fish house off the river today.  I think I said that last weekend too.  Fishing has been slow so I haven't been too motivated to use it much.  Now yesterday a guy told me he heard some shiners were coming upriver.  Maybe i should give it another try.  I guess I am just trying to hurry spring up and change from the fish house to the boats.

The Mungo Jerry song, California Dreamin, etc. were all great summer songs.  Throw in some Donavon, and we are in the season.  I just ordered some Tatonka Dust yesterday.  Maybe I already told you that.  I will let you know how I like it when it arrives.  Looking forward to it.  No big cooking projects for the weekend yet but something will spark my interest today I am sure.  I make a mean tuna salad that the wife really likes if nothing else I may try that.  I will post it on here too.

I heard the resorts are going to start moving houses off the lake in a week or two.  When this warm weather hits things will change fast with the thinner ice than normal.  A guy who had to do some Community Service for a day that works the ice for a resort said last year they measured up to 53" of ice and had to use 2 auger exts.  (back off Boar)  This year the most they have measured is 24" and some places it is only 20".  We had that cold snap a few weeks ago and it didn't seem to make much ice from what I hear.  Don't know what is up with that.  Maybe not long enough of cold snap.

Well time for one more cup of Java and then try to get motivated to get something done.  Might haul a jag of firewood in the garage/shop too today.  Got 20 bags of wood pellets yesterday for the pellet stove in the front room so nice and cozy here.  You guys stay warm today and have a good one.  TGIF.

Our buddy Mossy064 is Owen BBQ.com.  That is where I ordered the Tatonka Dust from.  Check him out.  He has seasonings, smoke tubes etc.  Great guy..

Hoy....I'm up! Sorta, aka kind of. One of those achey nites. And I also had some odd dreams...my front yard (my pride and joy) was all torn up...which it will be this Spring, as the gas company said they have to put in a new main and lines, which is under my boulevard and driveway. Tear up my concrete drive and yard....which they replace, but they'll never get my yard back the way it is. New driveway will be fine. I'm really stressed already about it. Showing up in my dreams. No plans for the day...no songs in my head yet...but you want Summertime? Best Summertime time song ever written, IMO. The Lovin' Spoonful..aka JohnSsebastian, (recognize him?)  who was the entire group, and best buddy of Denny Doherty and John Phillips. (Mamas and Papas) I was in California for the Summer of Love, ('67) and this song whams me right back there, it played continually....it's amazing. What a trip, dude. Boss. Enjoy guys. :)

Reb-  I'm leaving in a few minutes and don't have time to search auger blade sharpening.  I just picked it up from my buddy and I'd like to try to sharpen before spending $50 on blades.  Can you pm me some techniques, I've got files and stones and a bench grinder at cabin if I need those tools, thanks.

Can't find the vid or the pics. So, here's the way I've done it for years, and mine are razor sharp. Auger is 10 years old, still original blades. (Much better ones back then, than the junk chinese blades now..all of them are) Here's the page from my instructions...

Note: These are for Quantum style (Eskimo blades) or the straight "knife-edge" type blade. Chipper tooth style is a whole 'nother ball game..I'd do the exchange on those.

Here's how I've done mine from day one...Get a hard (white) Arkansas 4" stone and some good honing oil. (Gun oil works too) You can lay your auger on a work bench and do the blades right on it, as I do, but for your first couple times, take them off and put them on a flat surface, table top, etc.  The small 4" Arkansas stone makes this easy; that's why I use this small one. Take a Magic Marker, and run over both sides of the blade edge, leaving a thin line. This will tell you if you've hit that area squarely when "sweeping." As you get better, you can skip doing this. Oil both sides of blade. Lay stone on  flat side of blade first. "Sweep" stone lightly from front of cutting edge to back of blade in a semi-circular motion. An "arc"  ( I have chipper style, Quantum's), two or three times, then check blades for any burrs, etc. repeating as necessary. ONLY do this VERY lightly; you do NOT want to change the flat side of the blade, or you're screwed. Now do this on the angled part of the blade, following the angle EXACTLY.  Lightly sweep across the blade from inner to outer edge. This is where it's dicey; unless you've sharpened a lot of blades/knives, you can fudge things up fast.  You do this from day one with new blades, you'll maintain proper angle and edge. Impossible to re-set angle this way if your blades are really dull or chewed up, get a new set, then follow the procedure. I know a lot of us do it this way... and it helps if you've been doing it for 30 years with knives too.  Take your time, and swipe those blades after EVERY use; usually just one or two swipes on either side is necessary. Keep them oiled when not in use, too. Good luck!;D

I use a Smith's stone; had it for over 20 years. Can find them at good sporting goods stores. DON'T buy one of those "diamond" stones, this is what you want. Don't forget the oil....

Speaking of meat, the day has arrived. Lamb is ready from the locker for the freezer so looking forward to some grilling this weekend. Another gloomy day otherwise and like Reb I can feel the damp air messing with my joints. Was dreaming last night that I couldn't raise my left arm above my shoulder. I woke up because apparently I was trying to do just that. Son of a biscuit that was painful. As the doctor used to say, "Does that hurt?" Me: Well ya. "Then don't do that!"

Need to try to finish the tree pruning this weekend if the weather allows. Still plan on using some of the stuff for grilling and find it works pretty good when it's green like this, depending on the diameter of course. No need to soak it and in the spring seems like there are lots of sugars in it, making more smoke especially when it's fresh. Wonder how it would work in a smoker tube with the smaller stuff?

Ah, still remember those slow dances back in the high school days. Stairway to Heaven and Color My World were in vogue at the time. Recall dancing with a girl who was getting a little frisky, then all the sudden decided that I had ulterior motives and confronted me about it. Couldn't think of much else to say other than "Well ya. So what's your point?" :D

Still preparing for my "anal" meeting. Maybe I'll have some shirts made up. ;)

Mornin gents,  unlike you guys we took the dog fer a walk this morning instead of a swim...dangerous stuff fellas,  good to hear it was a happy ending in both cases. Not much going on today, my sorta pork belly strips have been on since 7, probably go about 8 hrs.

Music is a must for me as well, usually it's 70's or 80s rock, but sometimes it's the mood I'm in. Came home yesterday and the wife had her phone hooked up to the surround sound with a good mix of rock, some decent soft stuff and old country. ..sounded good. Have a great day! !

Good morning all!!  I got the bacon put in the smoker about an hour ago. I've got to bring some wood in a little later. I have no idea what I'm going to make for supper yet, maybe chili.
