Just a reminder to all dog owners to remember to use a tick spray or a frontline type product. I was hunting between Longville and Remer two weeks ago and discovered at least twenty small deer ticks on one of my goldens. With all the hair I checked her and found more ticks for the next couple of days. We hunted pheasants the next weekend and she seemed a little more relaxed, and she kepted coming to me for drinks out of her water bottle constantly(she wasn't over heated). The next day (Sunday) she picked at her food. (and she is one of those get out of the way fifteen second eaters) Monday morning she wouldn't eat and I was at the Vet when they opened. The Vet tested her and she had a temp and she was positive for Lyme's. The Vet stated that the time frame and all the cules we noticed help diagnois and get the treatment started right away. She was back in the blind last weekend retrieving ducks and eating P and J sandwiches. Sorry this got so long but I always spray my dogs at the cabin in the spring and summer but never thought of doing it in the fall.(my fault) I'm now using a frontline type of product and I just wanted to remind everybody about this. If you guys are like me its more about watching the dogs than shooting the gun.

Glad to hear your buddy is doing OK after the scare.
I noticed the same deal with all the deer ticks a couple of weeks ago on my YLM. I have been using frontline since he was a pup and he still had those little buggers stuck to him. I am really glad that I had him vaccinated for lymes as it is cheap insurance. It will be interesting the next time we go to the vet to see if he was exposed to the virus or not, the vet can do a test on vaccinated dogs to detect antibodies produced when they are exposed to Lymes.
To be honest I was really more worried about myself getting Lymes than my dog, we just need a vaccine for humans now.
My advice, Get em vaccinated at the vet or do it yourself if you know how, you can buy the Lymes vaccine at Fleet Farm.

The ticks have been terrible in the Remer area this fall. My Lab has been vaccinated for Lymes and he still caught it. I 'm up in that area most every weekend and my wife figures that she has pulled 6-8 dozen ticks off of him this fall.

You are correct. There was not enough interest, so they discontinued production.

Actually I think they pulled it (for humans) because it was not as effective as they hoped plus it masked some symptoms which caused the disease to manifest further without detection than if the person had not had the vaccination.

My daughter had Erlichiosis which is another disease that the deer ticks carry and it is much worse than lymes. She later also tested positive for lymes but that was a piece of cake compared to the Erlichiosis. Both are not good. There is also a third disease which the deer ticks carry but I'm not sure of the spelling. Babilosis or something. It is very serious and thankfully more rare. Nothing you want to wait too long to have diagnosed.

The most important thing is to be an advocate for yourself, your family or your pet if you suspect they or you have one of these diseases. Many in the health care profession do not think that a tick can bite and leave and still contract the disease. We found out they can. We were told "no tick attached- no lymes". Six doctor visits later and a very sick child and an ER doctor finally figured out what it was. I could have strangled the other pediatricians who kept telling us it was just a flu bug. I even requested a lymes test but they refused.
After about 4 months, she was doing much better.

my dog is going thru the last stages of lyme now.i got the dog from a buddy that past away a year ago.and the dog is going up to see his real partner. still very sad.he isnt in real bad pain yet,when he does it will be time to put him down.

If they can vaccinate dogs for Lyme's, can they also vaccinate humans? My wife came down with it a couple weeks ago. She never got a rash and finally after a couple weeks of running fevers and feeling crappy, she went to the Doc. and tested positive.
