IPhone to laptop

Recommended Posts

Thought I would ask here who knows.  Deer season starting soon and we have no tv reception so I was thinking there must be a way to connect my I Phone to my lap top and watch streaming video of the football games.  Have unlimited data so that is not a problem.  Anybody ever try this or know how.

personal hotspot?  Instant hotspot?

(whether this can be used may depend on your plan and carrier.)

Share your Internet connection with Personal Hotspot

If you're not in range of a Wi-Fi network, you can still get on the Internet with an iPad, iPod touch, or a computer by setting up a Personal Hotspot. A Personal Hotspot lets you share the cellular data connection of your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

Set up Personal Hotspot

Follow these steps to set up your Personal Hotspot:

  1. Tap Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot and then turn it on.

After you set up Personal Hotspot, you can go to Settings > Personal Hotspot to turn it on or off and change your password.

If you don't see the option for Personal Hotspot, ask your carrier if you can use Personal Hotspot with your plan.

If you're using iOS 8, you can use Instant Hotspot to share your cellular data connection without having to turn on Personal Hotspot first.

as described above that's it.  Hopefully it works for you.  I have an iPhone and Mac and sometimes even though the ATT iPhone is 4 miles from the tower by our cabin and the iPhone itself has coverage I get a "connection timed out message" over and over from my Mac.  Sometimes it works like a charm.  When it doesn't work I've tried all things to make it work and then eventually it works perfect but by then my blood pressure is a bit high.

Practice at home where you know the coverage is solid.

Also, I have my phone set up with Personal Hotspot but not my wife who would only use it when I'm with her.  That had to be done with carrier or at least once upon a time when we started doing this.

Your phone acts as the modem.

What Del is referring to is setting your phone up as "hotspot" is more of setting your phone as a Wireless Access point.  Once you have setup your phone as a hotspot you need to go to the laptop wireless setting and find the SSID that the phone is broadcasting.  Once  you have done that your laptop will connect to the web via you phone.

That may not be enabled by default.  AT&T adds that as a paid feature in many cases.

This article gives a pretty good description of how to do it.
