Pheasant choke tube and shells?

I am planning on a pheasant hunt near mitchell, sdakota the first part of december, weather permitting and have a question on which choke tube and shot size would work best for gunning pheasants over a very experienced flushing black lab. I am going to be using my Browning BPS pump 12 gauge with a 26" barrel I believe. I'm thinking I should use a modified choke with 2 3/4" hi base #4's. What do you all think of this set up? I'd go mod or full depending on how the birds are acting. Shell,Buffered 1 1/2 or 1 3/8th oz copper plated 5's @ 4 drams eq. They dont makeum any better then that.

I usually go to SD once a year. I always shoot 2 3/4", 1 1/8oz, #6's. I shoot'em through a full choke. Only bad thing about that is...wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait...OK NOW! If they are holding real tight I switch to a Mod! hehe

Mod choke will be fine. I use high power #5 shot or #4 shot later in the year. I use light load of #6 shot in the beginning and the middle of the year with improved cylinder choke. I also have used a skeet choke tube opening day when hunting corn rows.

The most of the birds we have been hunting are running ahead or they just fly away before you get close to them. Seems like you need blockers. Otherwise they just run out of the grass then fly. Here is my set up. Since i bounce from public land to private and from ducks and geese to pheasants. I genrally use steel for all my bird hunting. early in the year I use a imp cylinder choke with Kent faststeel #4. If the birds get wild I will sock them with #2. The next step I take is go to a Mod choke and Kent #2. Extreme late season in IA. I will switch to a Full choke with Copper Plated #4.

One advantage tht steel has is it does'nt ventalate the birds as bad. It also does'nt knock them down dead all the time. But then wounder dog get tp have a little bonus fun.
