Deer Audit: We're Almost There, Need Your Help

Recommended Posts

Great headway has been made by a great number of people to get us this far, but it's not over yet. In the next week the Legislative Audit Commission will be voting on the final topic for evaluation by the OLA for this year. Your help is needed to get us over the goal line. See the bottom of this post for more info.

Here's the current state and a snippet: http://www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/299276541.html?page=1&c=y

Now, the last action needed is for you to call each member of the Legislative Audit Commission to urge those members to select the deer audit in the final meeting later next week. Here are those names and phone numbers. If you cannot call, please send an email. But also know that these folks are getting hundreds of emails each day and email doesn't pack the punch a phone call does.

I'll admit it, I was one of those and am not afraid to admit I was wrong. Kudos, you guys have done a lot of work. However, you're only in the red zone, you haven't hit pay dirt yet. So while you should enjoy a few beers for your efforts, don't pop the champagne yet (maybe tonight though - a decision will be made today, correct?).

Also, if the PA audit is any sort of guide, don't get your hopes up too high that an audit is going to solve much.

Huh...I thought 3 or 4 guys here said the audit had no chance... winksmirk

Yeah those MDDI folks are just a crazy minority group of hunters. I am sure the legislators that now support this are doing it because of phone calls and emails from the few people posting about it on forums. Or could it be that there are a few more ticked off hunters than just the people posting on the internet?

I very much agree with this. I don't have much confidence that an audit will change much with the way the DNR handles deer management.

Hopefully it gets hunters to pull their collective heads out of their behinds and start to take some responsibility for the deer herd. But a concerted effort to pass up on does will likely only help large private landowners and some smaller ones who are able to work with neighbors. It would be a start though.

Big Kudos to Brooks. Just maybe he isnt as nuts as some thought..... Then again, maybe he is nuts, and just got a lot of people to drink his Kool Aid.

Whatever the case,,,,, he is owed many thanks.

I wouldn't give him any thanks until you see the results of the vote, and whatever comes out of an audit if it goes through.

I lost all respect for the guy when he didn't show up on time for the MDHA meeting where he was running for president. That was proof enough for me that he just wanted "MDHA presidential nominee" in his email signature.

I don't think we can hold Brooks responsible for how the vote goes or what the audit produces, as he's not voting and he won't be performing the audit. What Brooks did was get us to this point, and for that I am grateful.

I can't comment on why he was late, but I agree that punctuality or lack thereof is a great measure of someone's character. Today you're 5 minutes late, tomorrow it's 10, by next month you're snorting cocaine off a toilet seat. I can't respect people like that either.

HOURS late. 10-20 minutes when you're travelling a few hours to Grand Rapids, that's understandable. But not hours late without a heck of a reason.

The meeting started at 8am just like it always does, and was stated in the agenda that he would have received.

Well since he'd never attended before "always does" wouldn't mean anything to him...and if the agenda being mailed is anywhere near as "reliable" as the communications I've had from HQ as a local board member...I wouldn't be surprised if it was never received.

Doesn't really matter in the long run, does it? I really doubt Brooks wanted the job, it was more a matter of getting the attention of corporate MDHA....and I'm pretty doggone sure that was achieved.

Well now that we've established that mntatonka and DaveT are NEVER late, I'd like to give my personal thanks to Brooks for leading a movement that will hopefully get us transparency at the DNR. Every person that funds the DNR in this state DESERVES to know how they are managing our wildlife, and the processes they are using to do it. Be those processes political, biological, or financial, THEY NEED TO BE BROUGHT TO LIGHT!

I wanted to give this a bump before Monday hit. There are two steps needed before this is over:

1. Wednesday, the evaluation subcommittee is going to meet to narrow down the final list to roughly six topics that will go before the full Legislative Audit Commission either Thursday or Friday for a final selection. Monday and Tuesday, if you're on limited time, contact the four members of the evaluation subcommittee and urge them to keep the deer audit in the final list. Phone numbers are at the top of this thread.

2. After you have spoken with them, contact the rest of the members of the commission and urge them to get behind the deer audit in the final vote.
