So, I ended my hunt with 3 turkeys in 2 days.

Turkeys one and two were both two year old toms. Both were very beat up and had several broken and missing tail feathers. One of them only had 5 feather left in his fan! One was 19 lbs and the other was 14.5 lbs with beards of 5.75" and 7.5" respectively. Both had basic 2yr old spurs of 3/4".

Turkey #3 was a very healthy bird in great shape as you can see in the photo. He weighed 20.9 lbs and had a beard of 9.5" His spurs were 3/4" and 7/8". Not sure if he is a healthy 2yr old or a 3rd old. Either way he has the biggest fan I've ever held. I have one on the wall and this fan looks like it might be bigger.

I finally got them all butchered up and in the freezer. Now to complete my score sheet! Based on the quick calculater, my bird scores 55.8125 on the NWTF system.

Way to go Andy! That's almost too much excitement for two days. I'm gonna have to try that hiding behind the fan deal, maybe in WS later this week.

What an awesome hunt, Powerstroke! Thanks for sharing! I am sure that is a what many would consider a dream hunt. Nice job pullin the "I'm buying another tag" trick on the wife, I would've done the same!!

Congrats to all who harvested a bird. Sounds like powerstroke had an amazing hunt. I apologize for the lack of the updates. Work and the kids have me crazy busy in the spring.

My Nebraska trip was disappointing for me. I had a couple of Toms come within 60 yards but that was it. We have hunted the Chadron Pine Ridge District for the 8 last years except the first year after the fire. Things have definitely have change since the fire, its hard to run and gun with the lack of cover now. My cousin ended with 2 and my brother got 1 too. We still had a great time, the bird numbers are increasing and the hens had a lot of eggs in their nest.

I went to Wisconsin for on the last weekend in April, I hunted Saturday morning, I had a Tom & hen about 400 yards away but, she headed the other way with him. So the next morning, we set up where the Tom was strutting the day before. The plan was the right, 5:55 am a Tom came in about 30 yards and I missed. I cant remember the last time I missed a turkey, Boy that was a major disappointment for me. We decided to try another farm got all set up and here comes the farmer spreading manure. We then went to another farm tried some calling, but didn't get a response. We grab some lunch and decided to head back to where I missed the one in the morning. Were walking back on a narrow field, as I came to the crest of the knob I peeked over the and saw 2 Toms and a hen 80 yards own on the other side. We backed up and sat down. We made some calls and immediately got a response. The birds started to work there way towards us. The hens came over first just a yelping a way. Then I got a glimpse of the top of a fan, and then appeared the two toms heads and nothing else. The hen worked her way another 10 yards and cut back into the woods. I was still thinking the Toms would follow her but they never did, they must have cut into the woods just on the other side of the rise. We sat for a while longer with no action and I had to get back home. So tag soup again.

I bought an Archery tag for Mn. I have seen the birds mostly in the morning usually there is 2-3 Toms with the hens. I tried a few evening nights with no success. Finally friday the stars must have a lined. I got out around 5:30 and did my first series of yelps and goooobbble.

It came from the woods southwest of me. I called again and he gobbled.

He appeared 50 yards out and skirted to the north of my decoy. He made his way around me and went down the hill of me to the north. I yelped again this time 2 of them gobbled back at me. For about the next hour, I would call they would gobble, but didn't seem to want to come in. I took a break from calling for a half an hour and ripped off a few yelps and this time they gobbled seemed closer and gobbled again each time getting closer. I finally saw the one coming up the hill and waited until he and the other one was about 8 yards behind my decoy at 10 yards out in front of me. Before I released my arrow. This was my first Tom with my bow and I was excited too.

I will post pictures and submission form here in the next couple of days

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
