ohhhhhhh, (say that in a sad way) I'm going to miss you BACKHERUP guy! Buzzaw is not a toughguy moniker, I'm a friendly guy who loves hunting, fishing and the outdoors, we would probably get along except on Sundays when our footballs teams made us argue. I'm unfortunately moody when my Vikes lose....
I really have to disagree with you on your Lions and Vikes picks, however it will make for a good thread during the season.. I hope your prepared to take the heat from some of the guys that read this... lets all play nice... The Lions stink! just kidding, they're just not better than a third place team thats all. ( :
P.S. What happened to your Tigers??? Maybe they should recruit one of the Fab 4, I hear they'll take a paycheck under the table.

I'd have to agree that, while the Lions are much improve they're 1-2 years away & no better than 3rd in the division.

I realize it was a less than memorable game, but it seems to me that Randy Moss & the Vikes played in both the 98 & 2000 NFC Championships didn't we? Sure the Giants beat us 49-3 or something ridiculous like that, but we were there.

I like the Lions young receivers & Harrington to be a solid group of NFL players, only time will tell if they'll be stars or not. If Jones can have an impact in the running game they should definitely improve offensively.

Lions get the road win (and the monkey is off the back!), they are 1-0 with a divisional win to boot!
15 more victories to go... tongue.gif
At home against Houston next week...and the Vikings are in Philadelphia next week!

Yeah that sure was an impressive blowout of the lowly Bears squad! Too bad about Billy Sims, errr I mean Charles Rogers!!
The Vikes atleast scorched the Cowboys (#1 ranked 2003 defense) for 35 points!! The Lions better beat these cupcakes because soon they will have to face and lose to playoff teams... it's coming, you just need to be prepared for the sad Monday mornings hoss! ( :

Remember --- this is the same Backerup that said in june and july that the tigers would win the divison or the wild card. he also said that Alan Trammel would be manager of the year. Now the Lions???? Come on. THose Rex Grossman lead Bears and their impeccable clock management would have been beat or (for sure a close game) On sunday by USC or Oklahoma. Lions and Bears (OH MY) are the worst teams in football.

Back...

Put down the bong and slowly back away from it.
If you think for a second that the Lions will do anything more than finish 3rd or 4th this year, you've got to be as high as a kite.
No need to explain other than to say 3 words...
Packers
Vikings
Bears

OK, so they MIGHT bve ahead of the Bears, but NO WAY will they beat both Green Bay & Minnesota in the division, and that means they won't make the playoffs, m'boy...

Next year, possibly.. 2 years, good possibility. this year? NEVER...
If the Lions win the North this season, I'll eat raw eelpout!!!!!!

I decdided some misguided Lions fans maybe missed my post from the thread on the Vikes season record, so copied it in here.

A few comments, some are just facts:

I think the Packers will be okay this year, but the Vikes will be better. Super Bowl, well I don't know, but should definitely be competitive in the playoffs.

Is Charles Rogers made out of glass or tissue paper? Seriously I feel bad for the guy, bad luck or genetically inferior clavicles?

Vikes pass defense still gave up a ton of yards. Methuselah threw for 355 to a trio of has beens & malcontents.

Can anyone really hope to "contain" Randy Moss? I mean Dallas did hold him to 4 - 27, but two huge interference penalties that setup scores, oh yeah, & two TD's, throw in the bonus 37 yard completion.

Okay so Detroit "might" be better than the Bears this year. So???? The Tigers are better than KC this year too, whoopty do!! Will that get either of them discounts on playoff tickets??

2 wins...no losses. Last I checked, that's better than the Viqueens, Bears and Packers!
Ok, ok it's early, I realize that. And I do realize that the odds of the Lions winning the division (much less anything more) are stacked against them, however, anything can happen "on any given Sunday" (or Monday, or Thursday...).
Winning is infectious. The Lions have a taste of early success and are enjoying winning again.

Small steps. One week at a time. Game-by-game, quarter-by-quarter.

All the cliches apply. It comes down to execution and the belief they can win. Confidence plays a big role. The loss of Charles Rogers is huge. Soon, Roy Williams will command double coverage based on his 2 performances and 2 "Player of the Week" nominations (vs. the Bears and the Texans)...but that only opens it up for Tai Streets, Az Hakim, and tight ends Stephen Alexander and Casey Fitzsimmons.

Kevin Jones is the real thing at RB and you haven't even seen Artose Pinner yet...I have (at Kentucky)...

Do you know who the offensive coordinator is for the Lions? http://www.detroitlions.com/bio.cfm?bio_id=106

He (Sherman Lewis) knows how to generate offense, and once Joey Harrington figures it all out...the NFC North will becomes the LIONS DEN!...so start getting used it.

...please...enjoy. I'm here for your entertainment pleasure!

The Tigers, you must admit have improved drastically. Too many injuries (starting 2B Fernando Vina, starting CF Alex Sanchez, and season long nagging injuries to Pudge Rodriguez [back], Bobby Higginson and Craig Monroe [leg]), but that comes with the territory...must overcome those somehow.
They will contend soon (a year or 2 away yet)
That'll be fun, when Detroit could have simultaneous champions in all 4 major sports, and that's never been done before (I think...), anyway...please enjoy this!

Rookie Receiver Williams Wins NFL's "Play of the Week" Award
September 23, 2004

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- For Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams, one great honor deserves another.

On Thursday, the rookie Williams captured the "LEVITRA* PLAY OF THE WEEK" award, after his ultra-graceful, 14-yard touchdown reception to clinch the team's 28-16 home win over Houston on Sunday. Among his four catches for 73 yards against the Texans, the former University of Texas standout registered two scores.

Williams outperformed his competition for this award, earning approximately 35 percent of the total votes (second place finished 10 points behind). All weekly victors will now be among the candidates for the "LEVITRA* PLAY OF THE YEAR" award, selected in February.

Ouch!
Ran into a roadblock named Donovan McNabb! He's simply on fire right now...but there's always someone hot right out of the blocks. Season's young...lots of football yet to be played. The Lions will learn from this loss and "take it to" 3-and-0 Atlanta(!) and Michael Vick (gulp!)...it'll help to get their cornerbacks and running backs healthy again. The bye week should help a lot...If the Philadelphia Eagles finally make it to the Super Bowl this season, it won't necessarily be because of newcomers like Terrell Owens and Jevon Kearse.

That's the opinion of Lions cornerback Fernando Bryant.

"The way Donovan's playing right now, he makes that team go," Bryant said of Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who completed 29 of 42 passes for 356 yards and a pair of touchdowns. "He's taken that next step for a quarterback."

Before this season, McNabb's highest passer rating was 86.0 in 2002. He came into Sunday's game with a 129.4 rating, and it dropped to 122.0 because he was only 110.8 against the Lions.

Bryant said the big difference this year is the way McNabb uses all of the weapons at his disposal.

"I'm sure he sees the field better but even though he has T.O., he spreads the ball around so that you can't lock in on any one receiver," Bryant said. "I think I counted that he used nine receivers, including his backs, today.

It's getting exciting!
The Lions went into Atlanta (who was undefeated, 4-0), 7 point underdogs and somewhat undermanned due to injuries (cornerbacks Goodman and Bly out, and starting RB Kevin Jones out too) and beat the spread by 14, winning 17-10.
The Lions (going into the game) ranked 7th in the NFL (against the run) to Atlanta's number 1 running offense. They held Atlanta to 94 yds rushing (Michael Vick only got 29 yds on 5 attempts)!
Oh! And Detroit sacked Vick 6 times forcing 3 fumbles and one interception!! Joey Harrington was dead-on today with one TD and no interceptions...Woo-hooo!!! grin.gif

3 (wins) and 1 (loss) baby and sittin' on top of the NFC North!! (for now anyway) rolleyes.gif

The Lions host the Packers next Sunday and that should be on local TV (I hope, because the Vikes play next Sunday night in New Orleans on ESPN)...

"...Do you think your the best team in the division?"

I know what you're trying to do...but, to be quite honest with you...the Lions have a better defense than the Vikings do right now. If not for the "Daunte and Randy Show" the Vikings wouldn't have 3 wins. It was obvious in the last game against Houston...they let the Texans have 21 points in the 4th quarter!! That isn't championship football...sorry. I'm not saying that the Lions are a championship caliber team yet, by no means, but they are definitely capable of winning the NFC North, which is a pretty pathetic division right now...

On Sunday, the Lions dispatched previously unbeaten Atlanta. But the road gets tougher over the next six games, as Detroit hosts Green Bay (Oct. 17); travels to improved NFC East teams, the New York Giants (4-1) and Dallas Cowboys (2-2); welcomes Washington (Nov. 7); has pivotal, back-to-back road games with Jacksonville (3-2) and Minnesota (3-1), before finally playing Indianapolis (4-1) at Ford Field on Thanksgiving Day.

Detroit's offense was efficient and effective versus the Falcons', capitalizing on great field position and committing zero turnovers.
The Lions' defense has been extraordinary in the three victories, surrendering only 14 points-per-game, registering 14 sacks and collecting 10 takeaways. Plus, the Lions are the only squad to sack Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick six times in a game!!

I'll agree the Lions Defense has played better than the Vikes... BUT if your going to point out the negatives my friend you should also point out the positives... We are the #1 ranked offense in the NFL... Duante is playing at the level we expect as is our 4th string RB! We won on grass on the road in a hostile environment against a darn good Texan team. We have scored alot of points against good defensive teams.. Dallas (last years #1 ranked), Philly (we moved up and down the field and choked in the red zone), Chicago (always stingy), Houston (Fast defense thats OK)...
I'm glad to hear you think your team will win the division, it will keep me very interested in this thread! of course I'll go on record and say your crazy!! ( : Your team is about to go into the tank during their next 6 weeks... mark my words or I'll buy you a 12 pack!

Wow...how the times have changed! It wasn't but a few weeks ago...I couldn't get an iota of respect for my team, now everyone's afraid to say anything bad about the Lions for fear of eating their words later, when the Lions meet the Vikings.

...and this just in:

Detroit Lions defensive end James Hall collected the NFC "Defensive Player of the Week" award for his stellar efforts against Atlanta.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- James Hall...this is your life.

On Wednesday, Hall earned proper recognition for his stellar efforts, winning the NFC "Defensive Player of the Week."

"It's definitely an honor; it was unexpected," says Hall, who has 4.5 sacks (among NFL leaders) this year. "It's a team award because it took a team effort (for me to earn it)."

In Detroit's rugged 17-10 road win over Atlanta Sunday, Hall was an active participant for two game-changing plays by the defense. With the Falcons at the Lions' 21 -- and trailing 14-7 in the third quarter -- Hall fought through two linemen and sacked quarterback Michael Vick, while also triggering a fumble (for which Cory Redding recovered).

And with the Lions protecting a seven-point lead with a minute remaining in the game, Hall served as the primary benefactor of Jared DeVries' sack-turned-forced-fumble of Vick again, recovering the ball. This clinched the team's second-consecutive road win...

Back: I think that the Lions are playing some good football right now. But, I also think that the Vikes have yet to play good football, and when the team does there is not an offense in the league that can keep up to them. The Lions are atop of the North right now only because of there skin of the teeth win over the Bears.

Well...it was inevitable! I kind of knew something like this would happen. That's why I didn't go out there bragging we would win this one (against the Packers). Too hard to keep the Packers down for long. Also too many injuries to key players (on the Lions side of the ball). Oh well, that's football. "You must overcome adversity" (I hate that word! "Adversity", it must be the most over-used word in football!).

I figured the Lions to go 10-6 this season with losses to Philadelphia, @ NY Giants, @ Jacksonville, 1 to the Packers, 1 to the Vikings and finally @ Tennessee. I'm still on track with my prediction, however, they could go 9-7 with an additional loss to either Dallas (in Dallas) or Indianapolis (but the Lions always win on Thanksgiving!)

I'm convinced Joey Harrington is the cause for Detroit's offensive woes. He's unable to put together or even sustain long drives consistently, putting the defense on the field too many times, wearing them down! When he has, he's great, like he did against the Bears (week one), or Houston (week 2) and Atlanta last week. He just is so easily flustered.

I'm not a believer in his so-called talent. I'm losing confidence in him at an alarming rate!

I was excited when the Lions drafted him (in 2002), because at Oregon he looked sensational. His success hasn't translated over to the NFL. As a matter of fact, he seems to be getting worse as the teams improves around him (talent wise). It might be the "west coast offense" that he just can't grasp. I mean, he misses his reads all the time. He doesn't go through his progressions. He's got "happy feet", very nervous in the pocket. Gets rid of the ball too soon, mostly into coverage (as if he doesn't see the 3 defensive backs he's throwing at!). He also seems to be very inaccurate during games, missing wide open receivers in key, third-down situations 14 times this season already (3 times today)! He tends to throw behind his receivers a lot...I always felt Mike McMahon was better (if given the opportunity to settle in as the number one)...but, Joey's getting the big paychecks, so that will never happen!

Oh well, I just hope the Saints destroy the Vikings tonight (but don't take it personal, as I haven't taken anything you guys say to me, personally!) mad.gif

...and to think that Reuben Droughns was drafted by the Detroit Lions and let go by Marty Morninwheg and Matt Millen. Boy could Steve Mariucci use him now!

3566980.jpg

"Reuben Droughns has taken advantage of the opportunity to join the Broncos as a back-up fullback... In his fifth year out of Oregon, he entered the NFL in 2000 as Detroit’s third-round draft choice (81st overall) and spent his first season on injured reserve with a right shoulder injury suffered in the preseason. Droughns spent time on Detroit’s active roster (and the Dolphins’ practice squad) in 2001. Detroit did not renew his contract following the season, and he signed with Denver April 1, 2002..."

Back her way the heck up boss!!

Like I've always thought... you are a horrible judge of talent! Do you realize the packers gave up 47 points at home last week? They have been horrible for the past month and you got sucked into the false hope that your Lions were actually better than a bad packer team?! The fact is that the Pack is bad, but the lions are so much worse!! My goodness.... 38-10!! How can you even go on living? Should I call the shrink to help you through more of the tough times? I'm glad you didn't quote me earlier... but if you had it would have looked like this:

I'm glad to hear you think your team will win the division, it will keep me very interested in this thread! of course I'll go on record and say your crazy!! ( : Your team is about to go into the tank during their next 6 weeks... mark my words or I'll buy you a 12 pack!

The bad news is that you have to watch them play for the next five weeks and continue to eat that lice infested CROW you've been gnawing on all afternoon! Ha!!!

I'll give you credit for always stirring it up... just like the Tigers threads you started but never responded to once your team took a huge dump! Will you be doing that soon on this thread? I'm betting you will!! That makes it two quotes from me brotha!! What happened to your super hero WR today?? NO SHOW!!!! Kinda like that awesome defense you've been bragging about!! Who on your team will get defensive clown of the week??? Can't wait to see your next Lions helmet next to the toilet!!
