Kutz
Toying with the idea of building a fish house this summer. I know people have used the 3M VHB tape on steel and aluminum studs, but has anyone had success using the 3M VHB tape on wood studs? I have read if you varnish or paint the stud you should have better contact and holding power. Has anyone used this method? The house will be spray foamed, which will lock everything together but just want to make sure the tape will work to hang the aluminum sheets.Any advice is appreciated! ESSGuy
I just started work as a machinist at 3M, we use the double sided tape to adhere alum plates to the alum milling table. It is amazing how strong of a bond it is, need to get rubbing alcohol between the parts and some good pressure. Not sure of your use, but 3M makes some excellent adhesives. PurpleFloyd
I would use metal studs. Why do you want to use wood?
fishinnut_3446
Kutz, What I did was put 2" alum. strips on the studs then used the VHB tape and worked great
Smoker
3M makes a adhesive caulking that works great. I used it on my fish house. I have aluminum on wood studs and where the metal over lapped I used VHB tape. I also used the caulking to hold on the aluminum diamond plate. So fare 2 years and it is all holding strong. I would have to look through my papers to see what tape and caulking it was. The calking was some thing with 760. I was in contact with a 3M rep that helped me select the right material. Lip_Ripper Guy
If you check out my 2010 build, I used the PL Premium caulk/glue with wood studs and aluminum siding. Once it dries, you'll never get the siding off. I've used the VHB on a fair number of projects, but I don't really like the idea of using it on wood studs. The amount of work and expense if it doesn't work, which you won't find out til a few years down the road, is enough to keep me from thinking its a good idea. Hawg
LRG, you better start a new house. It's getting kind of quiet around here.

polarsusd81
You should not use 3M VHB on wood studs. It will not adhere the same way it does to metal, glass, or other non porous surfaces. You need to prep any surfaces to be adhered with VHB with a rubbing alcohol solution to clean them of any contaminants.

I really want to build a new one, but I still don't feel the *need* to. I keep hoping that one of the guys who stop by to take a look will make me an offer I can't refuse, but it hasn't happened...yet!
