Might_B_A_Pike
I have been giving this some thought, I find myself most times hitting a point going into a basin area when I am looking for active fish, target species: anything that bites.I figure I might be forgetting about the outsides points cousin, the inside turn.Where do you normally start looking for fish on a new lake, Inside turns or off a point. Just looking to hear what others do. Feel free to specify what species you would target in each area.
lungdeflator
For walleyes. If it is shoreline structure, I would fish a point over an inside turn. If it is midlake structue, bar or schoal or sunken island, I would fish the inside turn over the point. I think of the inside turn as sort of a "chute" that the fish take in the mornings and evening transitioning from on top of the structure feeding to deeper surrounding waters during the day. And vice versa for the evening. Alot of inside turns I see on shoreline structure end up with the top in too close to shore, vs a point which usually has more top protruding out into the lake with a better feeding area. CaptainMusky
Good ideas there lungdeflater. I agree with most things, but it really varies on the body of water you are on. If you are on big water, mille lacs, LOW, Red, etc, I fish inside turns 9 of 10 times. Most of the time these pieces are FAR from shore so I think it plays to your comment on midlake structure more, though in most cases they are really just a breakline along a shore, just in many cases 100's of yards from shore. blue_healer_guy
Shallow inside turns with weeds are deadly
Jordan Dahl
I fish mille lacs very heavily for walleyes. When im setting up for the night bite i set up exactly at the top of the chute going onto the shallowest part of the structure. It may be just a coincidence, but the points have always been good to me on mille lacs. Better than inside turns anyways.
fishinfan
Can you show an example of this? I'm just starting out reading lake maps, and it would help me understand what to look for with a visual. I'm not looking for secret spots, just a general view of what you look for on Mille lacs. Thanks!
