MidCoast
What are the pros and cons of a Chipper? How much slower will the Chipper be and how much heavier?I know chippers are good to reopen holes, better for dirty ice, blades last longer then laser blades, and you won't have to worry about pitch.. However, chippers are slower then lasers. If chippers aren't too much slower at drilling, weight is similar to laser bits, and it doesn't get stuck like laser blades does right before breaking ice, then I want one! live4chrome
I had a lazer for years before I soldit last year and replaced it with a pro 4 lite. The pro 4 lite may be e a little slower but makes up for it with lack of mess and smell and start up ease. At most it takes 5 pulls to start, usually just once though. Nothing wrong with either auger. Not having to smell gas fumes in my jeep is a huge perk and makes my girlfriend happy, which In turn, makes me happy. leech~~
Well, I only have one example why I keep using a chipper. A few years ago I was on a new lake and drilling pretty sallow close to shore and pulled up some sand and rocks! I still was able to dill more holes that day of fishing. A few years later I was fishing trout in a small trout like that I had never tried and even though the map said I was in about 4-5' feet of water! Nope right into the bottom with my shaver blades! The next holes I tired the bit just jumped around on the ice and I could not get another hole drilled that day, and I had just got to the lake! Screwed! Had to drive home. Sucks when your way up north! Never again. I would rather be slower and get a hole then to nick it and not drill a hole.
monstermoose78
I had a mag 2000 for a long time and it was a great auger. I won a lazer mag and I love it. I have not noticed the any faster and I cut lots of holes every winter. I get 3-4 years out of my blades. One thing I miss about the chipper is the ability to open old holes if I had a wheel house or house I left on the ice I would get chipper auger for sure.
