Selling Fur?

Recommended Posts

Just getting into trapping and I wanted to know what is usually done once furs are skinned?

Do most people dry and stretch the furs and then sell them or do you get them tanned as well then sell?

I don't plan on getting a lot of pelts but if I were to send the pelts to get tanned and the price to tan the pelts was "x" amount of dollars do you get that same price out of the pelt when you sell it?

You can either sell them to a buyer in the round, skinned or stretched and dried, local buyers or the auction houses don't but tanned fur from trappers.

As far as what most people do it varies from person to person there is no right or wrong way.

To many variables to give you a good answer, some fur isn't worth much no matter what you do to it. Generally (in a decent year) which this isn't you will gain a little money for skinning plus it doesn't take up as much room.

I think you should talk to a fur buyer.

Most guys put there fur up green just for storage space in the freezer during the busy part of the season and then put it up when they get time. I would suggest you go talk to a fur buyer at some point and ask questions. They will take time and show you how they put up fur or even let you watch them skin and a put the fur on a stretcher. The price difference is not much between green and put up. If you are selling fur in the round, it will have to be thawed out in order for the fur buyer to give you an honest price.
