Anyone use the new Clam Spear

I was at Mills today looking at decoys and saw the new spear by Clam. This thing is a beast and decided to pick one up. I was wondering if anyone has used one yet. It is nice and heavy at 8lbs. Hoping to break it in on Lac La Croix over New Years.

When I first got into spearing I bought one of the laser ones from GM and told my buddy who got me into spearing that I didn't like how heavy it was. He said you want a heavy spear so the big ones don't swim off. Just let them sink to the bottom with it. I have never looked back since and think I will be happy with it. I see a lot of people talk about the lazers sailing. Has anyone tried to weld some fins on it like a "+" to make it fly straighter?

Funny, I asked that question about spears after my third toss of one that appeared to plane out and miss the fish. Seemed like maybe some sort of vane might help? But I was quickly reminded how bow fishing arrows used to have them but no longer do.

It might be something to try but my guess is a weight forward designed, heavier spear and not pushing too hard is the best way to go.

Now it'll be some time before I reveal my other tongue-in-cheek equipment idea for launching a spear! grin

Like this????

Yah, but that looks like one planin' mutha though!

So with all the time spent in a spear shack thinkin' about tweaking things there probably isn't much that hasn't been thought of.

Maybe we should start a thread on things that HAVEN'T been thought of? Is it possible?

I saw the clam spear on the shelf at FF the otherday...

My first reaction was boy another attempt from an outsider looking in..... not too impressed.

Glad that clam is trying to get in the darkhouse spearing market... but they could have used a little more market research on that design.... I wonder if it floats with the big block of wood on the end of it? For $120 I am not going to find out.

For the price get an amish spear or put some more money with the $120 and get a nice custom spear you can have and use for a lifetime.

My two sense....

I heard recently from one of the local metro bait shops that the folks making the "Amish" spears are not in that business anymore, and that they cannot get any more of them.....we will see.

I agree with Merk that for $120 the Amish spears are a good bargain for a very functional dark house spear.

I cringe when I see all the junk spears out there and think of the many mortally wounded fish that result from their use.

My first spear was a $50 cheapie. I would not even give it away to someone just getting into the sport. It is now only used in the creeks for spearing the occasional carp for the garden.

It sounds like the Clam spear is an expensive, poorly constructed spear. A limiting factor in growth of the sport is obtaining a high quality spear that is worthy of our quarry.

I did a little more investigation and found out they make a fixed number of the Amish spears a year before switching back to furniture. They have distributed the allotment from last year and haven't started producing them again for this year. So they eventually should be more widely available at the local bait shops. They are running about $120 right now if you can find one, up from $100 a year or so ago.

If you ever need to thin the heard ER you now who to call. whistle

I bet spearhead would trade you an amish spear even up for any one of the top 95% of the spears you have ER.

You do have some very nice spears in your collection!!!!
