portable ice house recommendations

Coming from a guy who has only ever owned Clam shacks ....Otter is the only brand I'd spend money on right now. That or Canvas-Craft, which use the Otter sleds.

Runner up: well, really, take your pick. Find one on sale and drive on. The gap between Otter and the rest is that wide, IMHO.

I am a clam person. I had the voyager for 14 years and just up graded this year to the Full Thermal Jason Mitchell which the same size as the voyager. I am able to stand up and inside and at 6'4 is nice. I really like the light bar and the nicer seats in the new houses. The thermal part is nice as well even though I have not really got to test it out to much yet.

I would go to store that has many different houses and sit in them and see which ones you like and fits your budget.

I as well have only owned clams. If I had to choose a brand if they were all the same price I'd go with otter. Clams will get the job done but they aren't as well built as otters. For the money I go with clam. If they were all the same price I'd go otter. Go with a thermal house too or at least one with a thermal top. This prevents condensation and ice from forming

Last year I bought a Clam at the St. Paul Ice Fishing show. I would recommend you to go the show and buy whatever one you see fit. Every model from every brand will be set up on the floor so you can easily compare everything as well as talk to dealers and reps from each brand. I also got mine on a HUGE discount last year at the show.

I'll drop my Frabill plug. Going on my 5th season with my Thermal Predator and have no complaints. I've had great experience with their customer service dept when 2 of my windows cracked (they velcro out) from the cold and the sled is the deepest of all makes (was a selling point for me to hold all my gear).

The sled is not roto-molded (like the Otter) but it is also $200 or so less. I just fished out of my buddies brand new Otter 1200 Lodge yesterday and it too is nice.

I've been fishing from a wheel house for quite awhile, however there is a few times I would like a portable again. Last time I went shopping I saw a flip over by frabill I liked. It had a nice bench seat, and a door on each side instead of one in the front. That layout seemed to make more sense to just exit out the side instead of the front where your fishing. Check out the frabill web site they have seemed to step it up a notch. They just don't have the big name fisherman endorsing their products, which in away I kind of like that they don't.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
