Diver duck hunting is my true passion, I enjoy hunting all ducks but will go to some pretty extreme lengths for a good diver hunt. Like websdown said any diver decoy will work but goldeneye decoys do work best. They are on the more picky side of ducks when it comes to decoys. When I hunt divers in general I throw out drake bluebills and a few drake cans. When it is really lake season I throw out a half dozen goldeneye drakes and a half dozen drake buffelheads and it does the trip.

In my duck education that I got this year I was told divers don't like mixing with puddle ducks like mallards. The advice seemed to hold true and jives with the other posters above.

I bought my first blue bill dekes this year and would rather have three of them out and nothing else than 3 dozen dekes that included a lot of mallards.

White and black Decoys will get the looking I usually set out my bluebill and ringneck decoys for Goldies,,just make sure that if you use a line style pattern to have three or 4 of the white decoys on the farthest end of the decoy line/Spread this will let them see it faster.

Whistlers are very coachable. The later into the season, the more white you want in your spread. The size of your spread should be about 50% more than the biggest flock you see. If you are seeing no more than a dozen ducks in each group in the air, you don't need 5 dozen blocks.

I see on average about 3-8 in a flock sometimes a dozen or more.

So would you say if one doesn't hunt divers to much except for late in the season a dozen goldeneyes decoys would be a good idea or at least get them in closer to you? I'm also guessing that it is all in the decoys and calling isn't done?

Would goldeneye decoys work on bluebills, cans, and redheads as well? Or is it just the black/white decoys that matter to any of the diver ducks?
