cheating in bass tournaments

I've been fishing tournaments for about 3 years now and was wondering just out of curiosity if anyone has ever been in a tournament where someone was caught cheating or if anyone has ever witnessed another tournament angler cheating.

None of the tournies I have fished, have turned up "cheaters".

I sure hope that when we get to the levels of tournaments, that "cheatin" isn't even a thought.
I am sure it happens, but I have no reason to think anybody is actually "cheatin" in the ones I fish.

I watched a couple of guys get busted on tv. The CO had located the stashed fish. (local watched the *****s place them in a submerged box) Was waiting on them with a news crew at the tournement.

I believe this has happened to a well known Bass fisherman who owns an outdoors store in town here. That is why he could no longer fish the B.A.S.S tournaments. His initials are the same as Tom Kelly's.

Ah, the cage.....
I was kidding via email with Ebass and several others about how I was going to win the Smallie Magnet trophy this summer on the Miss.

Well, the joking ended up that I was going to win because of a cage that I will sink in the river next to the bridge in Champlin.

All in fun... No real story there.

Although, it would help ensure my victory to dethrone Big Mike from his pedestal.

Ironmike-
Capra is spelled with a C not a K.. and I think this is a wives tale, and dont believe it to be true.. Although many may not think to highly of his sportsmanship issues( I have heard plenty of stories), I dont believe he has ever used the fish sunk in a box trick...Innocent till proven guilty!

Exude,

You got me. I realized my mistake on those intials. I was just throwing out there for fodder. How did you do in the tournament last weekend? I hear the keeper fish were coming from shallow water even with the weather and water temp the way it was. Did you slayem'?

Many years ago, there was a team that won three tournaments in a row on Tonka and by a wide margin. Well, in the next tournament the Capras followed the guys around and guess what - they were using live nightcrawlers. Words were exchanged and a high speed chase ensured across the lake, with the offenders literally throwing the nightcrawlers out of the boat as they went. At the weigh in the offenders owned up to it all and have never been heard from since in competitive fishing. True story.

I know the Capras, and while none of them would win a popularity contest, there is absolutely no way they would do anything like the mentioned above. They can all flat out catch fish. I wouldn't be surprised if they could pull fish from their own bathtubs.

There was also a well-known muskie fisherman who was not allowed to fish the second and third days of one of the Shelby Tournaments due to rules infractions.

The fish in a box story has been in several issues of BASS TIMES and has happened on several occasions.

True Story.....
Was not a bass tournament, but the big local Carp tournament in Owosso, Michigan. I was about 13 year old and really wanted to win that $100 for the big carp. Two nights before the tournament I caught a carp that was close to 25 pounds, this would be the winner forsure. I took rope down to the river and hooked him up to keep it fresh until the day of the big carp contest. Then I could go remove the carp, get my picture in the local news paper and get my $100.
Morning of the tournament I went to get my prized carp only to find it was half eaten away, thought the turtles got to him. Threw it back in the river, grabbed my rod and a can of Delmonty corn and headed back to my little carp hole. An hour later I looked over to the carp that was still tied up floating in the river, noticed all kinds of commotion, when to check it out. I must have attracted all the dogfish in the river to this carp, they were having a feeding frenzy on my winning carp.

Morale of the story... If you try to cheat, the elusive dogfish may screw you over...
