Garlic - Anise - Salt - Which Scents Do You Prefer?

In the past few years, the tackle market as a whole has grown by leaps and bounds for those of use who fish Bass, meaning that with all the different styles, colors and scents of the lures, is any of this made it easier to have the ultimate go-to lure with that special scent that will really draw those fish out when times get tough? Does anyone feel that one scent will draw out more fish then any other, or is it a time of the season thing or just personal preferance? I know peronaly, I started fishing more pig n jigs last year and started using the Power bait trailers more with better results than the others, now is it the scent of the trailer, or have I have I just learned to "shake it and hop it" more correctly giving it better action resulting in a better strike ratio? "Ahhh, one of many mysteries to ponder on"!

I use Kick-N-Bass craw on everything, I dont really know if the scent brings in the fish or not ,but it a least seems to cover my scent on the lure and seems to make the fish hold the bait longer. This is a long debated topic whether scents do anything or not but I just have more confidence when using one, so I keep using them.

Sometimes it doesn't matter if it's scented, and other times you gotta have it.

I do like the salt tubes and I carry some BANG in crayfish flavor. It's good to experiment to see what they want that hour.

I have had the oppertunity over the years to talk to a few fish biologists about the "scent" market. What surprised me most was the fact that most companies use an oil base for thier scent. What the bio told me was that fish can not smell a substance unless its water soluable. For a fish to smell anything it has to be able to be disolved in water. Oil and water doesn't mix. However, fish can taste lures that have an oil base, just cant smell them. I have been using a water soluable scent for the last 6 years and have been impressed. Sometimes I will use an oil base scent as well to get the fish to hold on longer also. They way I look at it... it cant hurt you... Unless its a scent that they dont want!

Exudedude is correct. Most are oil based and insoluble in water. I think the reason for that is that it will stay on your bait longer if it doesn't dissolve in the water. These won't or at least shouldn't in theory attract fish that wouldn't otherwise bite, but they may give you an extra couple seconds to detect a bite before they spit out your bait.

Gulp baits seem to be pretty good and you don't have to mess with applying scents every few minutes - I use this when I think I need something a little extra. The majority of the time I don't use scents or scented baits.

worm i have gone to using either chompers brand or berkley power baits for plastics. the chompers have a strong garlic smell and lots of salt.( i love them!!) over the years i hae seen where it makes a big difference for bass and walleye.also gives me more confidence when fishing! del

As far as a I know all scent impregnated baits use oil based scents. Hot plastic and water based scents can be dangerous since the plastic temperature is usually well beyond the boiling temperature for water.

I am not convinced that scents/salt matter 75% of the time. However I will be the first guy to reach for that Bang after not getting bite for 2 hours!

I think scent really only masks human or plastic odor and may give confidence to the angler. Salt increases the density plastic thus makes it sink--"senko" type baits.

Just my two cents as an angler and manufacturer,
Mickey
