I was wondering that since I was told they grow on box elders. I hear they are very good.

The stalk has the grain and texture of one, but have never seen one that thick compared to the cap....that is not saying it is not one though. They have a big time earthy smell. Flavor is good, but would not go as far as very. At this point would probably pass, as shortly there will be a lot of "for sures" growing out of the knots of the box elders.

Yes, they are easy to distinguish. Most people that have box elders around have seen them before and they often form on the same wound year after year. Getting them down can sometimes be challenging though

Chickens, edible...to some more than others Have not seen one recently in a few places that should be loaded with them right now. Funny how such an unbelievable year for many varieties, but next to nill for one of the most prevalent and recognizable.
