tile substrate

Recommended Posts

I am installing a hot tub about 6 inches out from a drywall coated wall. I am thinking about putting tile on the wall as the tub splashing will hit the wall. I dont want to remove the existing drywall as the wall is long and the only concern is the area around the tub . I was thinking of cement board over top of the drywall to waterproof the wall and then tile over the cement board. Is there a better way ?

Thanks

First off cement board doesn't waterproof anything, it wicks water just like any other masonry item.

Second, 1/4 cement board is not recommended for vertical surfaces, it doesn't have the supportive strength.

If it were my project I would cut out the drywall where you plan on tiling, install 1/2" cement board in place of it, then install a waterproof membrane made for tile and vertical surfaces, then tile over.
