Portage Motor

Just checking what everyone uses for a small light weight motor used for portaging. Would a 2hp 4 stroke push two adult males in a 12 foot aluminum boat...up current? Leaning towards 2 stroke as they are lighter and can "tip" but found a great deal.

thanks,

cc

A great little motor is the 2hp Suzuki a sweet and dependable little two-stroke. Used them in AK on small boats, Avon as ashore boat for main boat, in plane for inflatable etc.

Totally reliable little motor. I'm sure they still make it. But the 4-stroke might be too heavy for what you want.

No worries-buy it and forget your troubles!

I have a 2 hp Honda from my Dad's old sailboat. It weighs just 29 lbs and is a carb'd 4 stroke.

Since the sailboat died, I wanted to keep the motor for sentimental reasons, so I hung it off an '87 twelve foot Lowe boat. The motor pushes it just under 5 mph at WOT and can put along as slow as 1 mph. I would think this would push 2 guys in a 12' boat into at least moderate current.

Downsides to the motor are the internal fuel tank being a quart or two (still lasts quite awhile), the exhaust is above the water line so its loud, and vibration is fairly high at the higher throttle positions. Runs pleasant enough at low and mid RPM's.

Portage motor.I'd go with the older Johnson/Evinrudes that had points easy to repair with few electronics or tools if it went down. The fold in half portage motors I know they made a 3HP and I think a 4HP.

Electronics break down on newer models your carrying dead weight the old points motors can be fixed on the spot with few toold or parts

I use a old monkey wards 3 horse. Bring a two gallon gas can with and that baby will run all weekend. It weights next to nothing, but its loud and has the internal gas tank. You can't beat the old two strokes. It pushes my buddy and me ( combined around 550 lbs) around pretty good in a 12 footer.
