rod and reel for shakey head/ jig worm

My favorite jigworm rod is a Loomis SJR-782. Now to get to your price point, I would grab one of those and then walk around a store to try to match the action/power in a less expensive rod. Lot's of quality rods out there for the budget. To help stay in budget, my favorite low budget quality reels are Daiwa Hardbodyz, like an exceler. But for jig Worms, I don't think you need a reel built like a tank so any smooth spinning reel would probably do, maybe Pfleuger President, seen them on sale lately.

In that price range, it's tough to beat a Premier. I'd also look pretty hard at the 13 Omens. Hear nothing but good about them and just handling them off the rack they seem nice.

Honestly though if it were me, I'd look awfully hard at the Fenwick Elite Tech smallmouth series. They have a 6'9" med power x-fast that is really an awesome rod. Fenwick is really back from the dead all of a sudden, and those smallmouth series rods are sweet.

I'd look for a 6'6" to 7' med power x-fast. I like an x-fast because there's a little more pop in the tip for snapping the jig off cabbage stalks, but there's still a light enough tip so you can lift up and feel weight on a dead weight bite and not spook the fish into dropping it.

Checked out the St Croix models and the omen 13 at cabelas but went with shimanno Compre 7 ft med fast tip one piece all cork grip. I have 2 of the Clarus casting rods and love them. I will give it a try
