Will the price of discontinued bass rods increase with time?

Are there brands or rod models that will only increase in value with time?

For example: I have not tried many bass rods, however from those that I have tried, I love the Carrot Stix PG model. I love their sensitivity, the backbone and how light it feels. (Not here to argue or debate what rod is better etc.... Just sharing my interest and preference). I regret not buying more of them when they were going for $75 at Gander Mountain. I have 1 at the moment. Been trying to find some locally and online and have seen some that people are trying to sell for $150+. As the trend goes, when something is not being produced anymore, people try to jack up the price and claim it's glory for it. I understand carrot stix was bought out and a new company is producing them now. I have not tried the new ones yet.

In your opinion, do bass rods increase in value and increase in interest when they are not produced anymore especially if the majority favor it?

My guess would be, ALL bass rods will either decrease or maintain its' value with time if they are not produced anymore. This is due to better and newer rods coming out yearly.

On another note, I have met and seen some anglers that buy aggressively new gear every year and then sell them at the end of the season every year in prep for the new season.

Unless we are talking 25-30 years later then they are antiques and that is a whole different ball of wax. I think my old Skyline rods might actually be worth something.....

Very few mass produced items now days will have much 'antique' value in 30 years though. Unless it was a 'limited edition' or 'collectors edition' and even then, some companies make millions of them...just look at the "new" Miller Lite cans.

Unless they were completely handcrafted by somebody important, signed, and authenticated most manufactured items won't have much collector value as they age.

Another consideration. With Carrot Stix you WILL probably need to use the warranty. There are lots of threads on all the sites of them breaking and not being able to get the company to even answer the phone. Lots of upset customers. I don't think the $75 Gander one was their better rod, they have multiple priced models.

What was retail on that rod new? Guess I would offer him half of retail? At least he will know you are interested and when he decides he really needs to sell it, then maybe you will be first in line for it.

They do not. The most value the rod has is right after they are discontinued. I learned this when I found a rod in the box here at the store a year after they discontinued. Very tough to sell. When users move on to the next product it is pretty hard to get them to go back. Especially as technology gets better.
