planer board lines

just a questions to all you guys that troll planer boards for walleyes what is the best line to use so it dont slide down the clips on the board or is there a trick to this ive tried pulling boards a few times with little results and i think this could be a valuable technique if i could learn a little better and tips are appreciated thanks

What type of boards are you using? Offshore? With the offshore board I typically run OR 16 clips(red) on the back of the board and the medium tension clips on the front. You can increase the tension in the clips by pushing the spring all the way forward. The red clips have a raised dot in the center that you can put the line behind to prevent the board from coming totally off your line when the front clip has released. You can also wrap the line once around the clip to decrease slippage. The church boards have an adjustable clip that you can just screw down until it holds for you. I typically run 10lb mono and 40lb power pro with my board lines. A long, soft tipped rod can really help keep your boards from breaking loose and slipping down the line. The advanced angler clips from the big C are really nice for locking down on superlines and are easy to remove with one hand and I have had zero slippage when using these clips.

I like 12# Big Game wich is close to 10# diameter for my mono board rods. Mono will stay in any release much better.

im using an offshore but i was using the red clip in front and the orange one in back maybe ill have to switch them around also i was gonna try #10 power pro is that too small of a diameter

That is probably too small of a diameter for the clips and the repeated slippage will cut a groove into the pads. You can try double wrapping the clips or switching to the advanced angler clips which tend to hold pretty solid. One other trick is to use a rubber band looped around the line a couple times and attaching the front clip to the rubber band but with the small diameter line the rubber band may still slip.

I bought a set of the opti tackel lime green planer boards with tell flags on them. $18 each, though that was a good deal. they are basicly off shore boards with the church type clips. I plan on using 12lb spider wire mono and 12# suffix with them.

if your using a small dia. braid cant you wrap it around the front clip once so it doesn't slip.

thanks for tips guys i should of known mono was the best answer i always try to use the new fancy line but mono seems to be the goto line

I use a planer boards ALLOT and here is my exact setup. Offshore OR12 boards some are set up with the black adjustable clip (OR 18 snapper) and some are set up with a church clip on the front of the front. All boards have the OR16 on the back. All 6 reels are set up with Berkeley Trilene 10 pound XT. I have caught several walleyes over the 28 inch threshold, big cats and sheepshead over 25 pounds on Green Bay. The boards do not slip, and all are set up with tape flags.

X2. Couldn't agree more. The OR 18 clips are a must. Just wish they would get so much for them. Once you have them you will never loose a board.
