Ticks are out & oral tick medicine

Went for a hike yesterday and found my first ticks on the dogs later on. Advantage of having nearly white yellow lab I guess!!! Found one later on the old black one too.

My vet talked me into trying something new this year, an oral tick medicine called Nexgard, put out by the same manufacturer as Frontline. Actually wasn't that tough to talk me into it because my younger dog hated the Frontline, she would hide when she smelled it going onto the old dog.

Curious to see how well it works and how long it lasts. I've found in the past that the Frontline would only be good for about 3 weeks and then I'd start finding ticks, I always thought it was because my dogs are in the water alot, will be interesting to see how long this oral stuff works before I find ticks.

Please keep us updated on that oral stuff! How much was it? Just a pill or a chew that the dog swallows? I am not a huge fan of frontline, it seems messy, but it works well for my dogs.

i did see a quick read up on the oral stuff and its supposed to kill ticks faster than the standard frontline- BUT it has a disclaimer of only Dog ticks, aka wood ticks, so I'm assuming deer ticks are resilent to this?

advantix has worked better for my dog since i switched from frontline, kills them alot faster and has some repelency

I'm going to be [PoorWordUsage] if it doesn't resist all ticks!!! So far its been working good, been on a few grassy walks with the dogs when it was warmer and so far the score is Dogs 0 ticks, People 1 tick - I picked one off my chest a few days ago.

I'm going to try the newest collar out, have 2 buddy's down south that swear by them, we'll see nothing has been 100% befor..

doing a quick search on it, it looked like nothing but good; let us know how it works for your dogs this spring, i may switch from advantix to that as it would be easier and it lasts up to 5 months with swimming

I read that Seresto collars shouldn't be used if your dog happens to sleep on your bed, apparently it's in the paper work in the package. One of our dogs does. Wonder if this is a big deal or just CYA attorney stuff.

I'd like to use these collars because one of our dogs has tested positive for Blastomychosis twice and that was with using Frontline.

I think you have posted the wrong disease, blasco has nothing to do with ticks.

Blastomychosis is caused by Blasotmyces, a microscopic fungal organism found in moist or damp dirt. Blastomyces is commonly found in the Mississippi, Wisconsin, and Ohio river valleys. The ideal location includes damp to wet areas containing rotting materials such as trees, in acidic soils, and near water. According to my research, sporting dogs have a higher risk of contracting the disease than non-sporting dogs. I also found that statistically, large breed and male dogs contract the disease at higher rates then female and small breed dogs.

Dogs contract the disease when they do what dogs do, sniff and dig around in the dirt. In most cases, the dogs immune system can handle small amounts of the fungus and no infection will result. However, if a dog ingests a large amounts of the fungus or the dog has a suppressed or compromised immune system, are stressed by other disease, or has a poor diet, the spores take hold deep in the lungs and the infection spreads rapidly are more likely to develop symptoms and need treatment. Left untreated, the disease is fatal.

I'll let you guys know, Just orderd 3 , vet clinic wanted 78.00 each found them online for 44.00 each, mine sleep on the bed as well sometimes all 4 of them, can't be any worse than the topicals that go on and leave oils on there coat.. Guess there won't be any ticks in bed this year...
