Ipilot link and Terrova universal sonar

tunrevir

Question

I have been looking to upgrade my boat and put in a hummingbird unit with the new 80# Terrova ipilot link system with the universal sonar head but have heard that when the units are hooked up there is interference when the trolling motor is on. Is this common, and is it an easy fix or a problem between the electronics? I am also wondering if you can use a side image finder and a down image finder through the Ethernet hookup between units and switch to seeing either the side image or the down image on both units or how that would work. Does the universal sonar on the bowmount allow for down/side imaging or is it a straight sonar?

The US2 transducer only works with the standard 2D sonar and not side or down imagining. as for the interfrence issue minnekota supplies a ferrite bushing that gets put over the motor wires that is suppose to help with the issue. I just added Link to my motor this past weekend and added this piece over the wires(included with the Link head). once the lakes open up I will go and try it out.

If Humminbird, Lowrance, et al had their stuff together they would put bluetooth in their depth finders, just like every smartphone and tablet already has.

Of course then they wouldn't be able to sell you overpriced cables and accessories.

Has anyone run a sideview or downview transducer attached to the bowmount trolling motor. Would or does this work without interference issues and does the extra bulk of the transducer cause the trolling motor steering to be less responsive? I guess, why pay for a downview/sideview unit up front just to use it as a standard sonar or do folks use the Ethernet to pull up the down/sideview from the rear transducer. Is it possible to do a split screen feature with the standard sonar on the front unit and the down/sideview from the rear unit and also see the contour map? three splits? I am trying to decide between a terrova with ipilot or the ipilot link and or the universal sonar or attach a side/downview transducer to the bottom of the bow mount. Anyone wanna take a swing at this? I already have a 900 series downview Hummingbird at the console.

I have the SI unit on the transom and feel that if it was on the trolling motor moving every witch direction it would be tough to really know where and what direction the signal was coming from. Maybe call Huminbird to see if you could run the SI from the transom and down image from both the trolling motor and transom from a switch or spliter of some kind.

Just a thought

Tunrevir,

I have a 1198 at the console and I bought a 798 to put at the bow. I plan on mounting the compact side imaging transducer that came with the 798 to the terrova trolling motor. I bought a mount from transducer shield to mount the transducer to the trolling motor. There are some videos on u tube about how to do it. I am hoping there won’t be interference issues, but I guess I will find out when I get it installed. I plan on using the cheap locator I have on the bow now to pull from the us2 when I am pulling from the rear transducer on the 798. I don’t think the trolling motor will be less responsive. I talked to the rep at the humminbird booth at the NW sportshow he said when the trolling motor is turning the side image will distort from being turned just like the one back on does when the boat is turned. I bought the 798 because I wanted to be able to Ethernet it and pull from the rear transducer and from the GPS puck. If the trolling motor turning messes up the image to bad I will just pull from the rear transducer. From the research I have done I think you can only display info from one transducer at a time. If you find out different let me know. I have ipilot but I haven’t added the link yet. You can Ethernet 2 locators together, but if you want to add the ipilot link to 2 locators you need to buy a 5 port ethernet switch.

it is my understanding that each unit can be set to what ever transducer you want to use as the source(may need a software update to do this). setting this is done in the networking menu after more then one unit is networked together. in my personal case I just added a 899 on the console and will be adding another 899 in the bow. what I will have to do is to go into the menus and switch the transducer selection to use only the 2D sonar on the bow unit and then go to the networking menu and set the source transducer to be the US2 transducer. doing this I think I should still be able to see the SI and DI from the transom transducer but when on the 2D sonar display it should pull the signal from the US2 Transducer and not the transducer on the transom when using the bow unit. the unit at the console will be set up to only read from the transom transducer.
