Team 1 "Dead RedHeads"

Fins-n-feathers

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I didn't see a thread for team one so I figured I would get one going.

Im gonna be hunting in central MN in the same spot for the third year in a row. I have been skunked so far but have had several instances where I came oh so close only to have it busted up by bad hunter decisions or freak chance.I think this year will be the year for me though. The only problem is that my two hunting partners are both on different teams... so that should be interesting.

Anybody got any ideas for a team name?

Hey guys! I will be hunting in Wright County with my bow during the last 4 seasons. The area I will be hunting is a new area for turkeys by me. Until two seasons ago we had never gotten a picture of a turkey on a trail cam or seen one while working the fields. Last season I only hunted there a few times because I still didn't quite believe there were that many around. The early part of summer and last fall I saw at least a half a dozen jakes and toms and quite a few hens.... So this year I am going to put in the time and see if I can bag one.

I also have a few back up areas that I will go to if my first area doesn't seem to have as many birds as I think it does. Can't wait for the archery portion of the season to open!

Team Name suggestion: Golden Gobblers

Checking in

I have taken two birds in NE already but did not have the form before I left. First bird was 25LBS10oz very big bird for that area but do not have the pictures of weight. Have plenty of wittnesses but I do have 5 more tags to try for our team.Second bird I shot the beard off both were bow birds. Not sure if this will mess up the team or not.

Thanks String I think our biggest was just around 24 but your right most do not go over 23. I shot one a few years ago I went back with the gun 23.5 with 1.5 spurs but nothing like this down there.

Funny I was so off on weights for other birds in camp I said this one was 22. crazy

The weater was tough colder there then here. Most mornings were 17 to 22 to start the days off.

congrats on a hoss, hoyt.

too bad you didnt get contest stuff, cause if he had good spurs and beard he likely would have been in the running for biggest tom

just stick another one similar and the team will forgive you on this one grin

Present and accounted for. I've got a D season tag in Minnesota, followed by the week after that in Wisconsin. I'll be taking a friend's daughter out for her first turkey hunt next week in Wisconsin for the youth hunt and hopefully be doing some scouting for myself as well.

Congrats Hoyt - that's a great bird to start off with!.

Sorry I have not had too much time to write up a story but I will have a few pictures. I actually took both birds out of the blind on this trip that was a little different. Did do some running and bowing one day and got reall close to one he did not like decoys.

After this we pulled all decoys and had better luck with none out. I did have them out one day and the cows loved them.

Friend of mine with his first NE turkey after a few trips finally connected. Called in 3 birds one evening and we doubbled up.

Also a picture of his trip down to meet us on Monday last week he hit this storm and almost didn't make it there. They were closing down I-90 on him but he made the exit just in time.

The cows loved the decoys but we didn't use after this.

Just to put another out there

Heart breakers and Tom takers

Heading out tomorrow evening not looking to good but we will see what happens. Found 7 turkey carcasses on Saturday a couple a Tom's for sure but couldnt tell on the others. Did not really find any other sign. But if they are around and give me one glimpse they are in trouble I will have the boom stick this week.

Mn bird down. Did not have a lot of time to hunt this season but made it work out. I was worried I would not see anything with finding 7 dead last saturday scouting. Was lucky enough to take this guy on Saturday morning had to watch this group of gobblers for over 3 hours until I was finally enough for them to come check out. There ended up being 7 gobblers to come see me but still 2 or 3 more they left behind them in the field.

Also I will get my NE bird registered and get the form in so we will have two birds on the board. Just been running crazy. Next stop SD I leave Sunday morning. Some time this week I have to put new flooring into my house also hmmm I wouldn't have it any other way running crazy in the spring.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
