I am thinking about purchasing the Hummingbird 798ci HD SI Combo Fishfinder and GPS. There are some great sales going on right now for it. However, before I buy, I am wondering why it is being Discontinued by the manufacturer? Was it not a good model? Seems kind of fishy.

It seems like typically this kind of product has a short life for each model. A year or two and a different model that is quite similar is introduced and the older one is discontinued. Sort of like phones in that regard.

I bought my 798c SI 5 years ago, it's been a great unit, no problems at all.

If you want to get into a SI cheap, this is a great opportunity to do so, Humminbirds are reliable, no reason to worry.

Sounds like the 798 is replaced by the 698. Humminbird had a 598 last year, didn't look much different than a 798 in specs but the 598 is discontinued now too.

Thank you for the replies.

Does anybody know which Navonic Card I should get to go with it to show contour lines?

the Navionics card will work with the 798 but if you ever plan to get I pilot link you would need the Lake master chip. as was stated before the 500 and 700 series is now discontinued and replaced by the 600 series. the bad part of the 600 series is that it is not ethernet capable. the are a few non color 500 series models that are still being made. now to get ethernet capable unit you would need to get one of the new 800, 900, or 1100, or Onyx series or buy one of the discontinued 700 or higher series(last year was models like 898, 998 the new ones are now the 859,899,959, 999, 1159 or 1199 models).

Brad brings up some good points!

A buddy of mine bought a 798 a couple years ago, I think he ended up getting the Navionics Hot Maps Premium North ( something like that ), it cost his around $150.

I run a Navionics in my 798 but my card is older, its from 2007 and it's called Lake of the Woods + 2k, it's served me well for what I've needed.

Both Navionics and Lakemaster cards will work but Lakemaster is the only one that will work with Ipilot Link. If you only fish Minnesota (no clue where you live) I'd recommend Lakemaster. You get more Minnesota lakes that way. Go to both websites and compare the lake lists for the card you need.

Do some web review searches on it. Some times you will find trends with products that stick out. I was already to buy one brand and found out people were having all kinds of GPS position issues with the internal antenna.

I am also looking at buying the 798 HD . I have the I-pilot link but need a little help on understanding the hook up. Can I just hook up to my link and I am ready to go. I also want to use when running at high speeds so can I hook up the ducer that comes with 798 to transom and switch back and forth between front and back?

The way I understand it, iPlilot link controls your trolling motor off the contour lines provided on the lake master chip and not the actual depth reading provided by the transducer on the trolling motor, so it doesn't matter if you have it connected to the transducer on the trolling motor or transom. You can purchase a switch to go between the two transducers if you'd like.

Thanks for the help I think I might have stated the question wrong. I have the ducer in my I-pilot i dont have the link but You gave me the info I needed. I can use the 798 in both ducers.

The US2 transducer built into the trolling motor (if that is what you are talking about) is only a 2d transducer. It will only give you conventional 2d sonar, not SI or DI. Just so you know.

Thanks that is what I was thinking but you confirmed it. Options for si di in front and back would be a second ducer? With my v2 it probably isnt cost effective but, is that an option and how much more would that cost?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
