Going to Lake Winnipeg in march and need some help with a GPS as I am not tech kind of guy, was wondering if the Navionics US/Canada app for my Samsung phone will work work okay or should I look for a hand held gps. Need something that is very user friendly and has very good info for fishing and navigating.

million threads on here about this.

If you really just want this for Winnipeg, I'd use your phone and the app. Check and make sure the lake is on there, but I bet it is. Also, be sure and download the Winnipeg map to your phone before you get there. If it's not pre downloaded, you will need data service on your cell phone on the lake.

The app is like ten bucks, maybe 15 for us/canada.

A standalone unit is going to be a lot more expensive. Probably $300 for a great deal on a unit and a map chip. It will also be more rugged, waterproof, and get better battery life than your cell phone.

I have both.

Preloaded or not. What's going to tell the map where the heck you are or where it is without service? whistle

The onboard GPS chip in the phone wink

Which will be just a stand alone map without service. You may as well just bring a paper map if you have never been to the lake before. I would not chance what may be a trip of a life time without a hand held gps with a chip. wink

Bobby makes a good point if you use the app, download what you need before you go, data charges get EXPENSIVE really fast!

I believe someone has put out a free file for Garmin handhelds to use on Winnipeg but I haven't looked at it.

Here's a screenshot from my Nexus 7 with the Navionics app installed, this is the south end of Lake Winnipeg.
