BLACKJACK
Rigging rods and retying hooks in preparation for a run to the Red this weekend and was wondering what size hooks people put on?? Talking about my non-jigging rod, with a bobber and fathead (or small shiner). Also does hook color matter?? I have red hooks and white hooks and plain hooks.... I usually try to rig several differently.
fiskyknut
I use #4 and #6 Kahle style hooks for them Wally's. Plain bronze works as good as any colored hook I've tried.
GeluNumber1
I use a red #6 octopus hook most of the time. Sometimes a black #8 hook will get the nod when they're not as aggressive and downsizing is a good idea.
Northlander
I like the red #6 VMC Octopus hooks for smaller minnows and the #4's for medium. When using bigger golden shiners for bigger eyes or lakers I like a #2. Key is ti make sure you have some good hook left after going through the minnow. Bought some #6's and 4's yesterday, boy those 6's looks small!!! Almost like I could put a wax worm on it and go after sunfish!!! But I came on here looking for advice from the pros so I tied one of each on rods last night and will try them. Thanks!!
fishwater
Bought some #6's and 4's yesterday, boy those 6's looks small!!! I use octopus #2 or #4. I was kinda surprised fisky suggested a #6.. I 100% consider the hook to be an attractant. I use a #6 only when the bite is super slow. It's hard to get two minnows together on a #6 for the X-marks the spot gambit. FISHINGURU
#4 for Fatheads and Rainbows, #2 for Shiners.
BLACKJACK
When I went thru my hooks I do have a lot of number 2's....
Stick in Mud
I use a 2,4, or 6, depending on the size of the minnow.
ZachD
Just got back from Red... #4 pink hook, a gold northland Forage minnow (during day), and a glow demon ( at night ) seemed to work really well for the dead stick
