MuskieFever
This warmer weather has brought great things! I was able to get out on thursday and friday with 2 others. Thursday was frustrating, great weather but we just couldn't get on a school. Caught 3 small walleyes and and 3 perch while drilling WELL over 100 holes. Friday morning started out similar. Started from 8-25' looking for morning walleyes but couldn't find them. Decided to move and it paid off big time! Ended up catching around 15 walleyes and 45 perch. Kept 9 eyes and 21 jumbos. After striking out on this lake multiple times, it was great to have it pay off.
picksbigwagon
hoping to get up there this weekend with my son (10 yrs old)for his birthday trip. what did the area that you moved to have in it that made it such a great switch? was it the depth, the bottom structure, trees? Driving 6 hours and fishing with a kid for 2 solid days of no fish would not make a great weekend.
candiru
I don't know details about the Perch bite right now. If you find that tough you can always bring some tip-ups and chase Northerns as a back-up plan. 4 lines per person. Lot's of 3-5 pounders to be caught in the area. You will also find it easier to get specific information. Lake Irvine has been good in previous years, although there may be better spots out there now. FLAG!!
How much snow is on top of the ice right now? Curious if trucks will be fine or if I need to start tracking down a sled or two for a trip at the end of the month thanks

picksbigwagon
Sorry about that: saturday we went shallow in the morning becaue we hd a report the day before they were shallow. We plugged a ton of holes, no fish, went out to Rocky point and caught fish in the afternoon in 30 feet, demon jigs and the smallest minnows in the bucket ( this was the key all weekend, demon jig to the bottom, wait 30 seconds, lift it up a foot, wait 10 seconds, lift it again, set the hook. It worked sunday as well but everyone we talked with Saturday night in fish cleaning house, they were out deep. Sunday we tried to find rocks in 25 feet of water in 6 mile bay, no luck so we ran back to 45 feet in the main basin and came home with 30+ Perch most over 10, one 13.5" and 5 walleyes. All the classic Devils lakes tricks didn't work for us, a spot of green or chatruese helped, hali jigs worked too, but as good as the demon jigs.....don't forget to use perch eyes, they really worked well for about 30 minutes sunday afternoon. It is not Mille lacs, the roads aren't plowed 5 lanes wide, there aren't, well at least last weekend, 50,000 people on the ice all day long. Devils. Lake is a small town, not a lot for restraunts, next year we will try and stay at the casino and eat there........ Wherever the people are , the fish are there, I hate joining the crowds, but that was the key this weekend. We made it in under 6 hours from Savage, 75 on the interstate, 80 between fargo and Grand forks and the speed limit on hwy 2 is 70, but we saw the most cops on Hwy
picksbigwagon
guess I could have just tagged this instead, my write up on a different forum here at HSO: Devils Lake write up
MuskieFever
Yeah the down side to devils is that most of the time, the crowds are on fish. I like venturing off and trying my own spots as well but on devils that can be very tough. Glad to see you got into so decent fishing. And yes, it would be nice to have more plowed roads but the only people who plow are woodland resort unfortunately.
