Braided LIne on a Spincaster Reel

I know it's been talked about that no spin cast reel is designed for braids, but!! smile

With the new line such as PP slick; would this work on a spin cast with out cutting into the pick up pins? My wife prefers to use only a spin cast reel, and I would like to set her up with something for bigger fish than the one she uses for pan fish.

I've used regular 10lb. moss green PP on my Tica reels for close to 10 years without a single "dig-in" incident. I've pulled up half a dozen 10+ eyes and one 22lb. northern. I use about 5yd. of backer line on the reel and spool it really tight when putting on new line. I tried some PP ice line, but couldn't tell enough difference to justify the extra cost. I do the same thing with a couple of open water jigging (spinning) reels with no adverse effects. I'm either lucky or I'm on to something, but I'll continue until proven wrong. Spiderwire (for me) was a disaster, but I've had no problems with PP. I've not used the newer braids as I have not felt the need to experiment.

I've got two older Shimano Saharas, a Shimano Stradic and a Pflueger Ambassador that I use for open water; Ticas for ice fishing.

Spincaster's are the ones with the button that kids normally use. They have a small plastic pin that winds the line onto the reel and braided line normally cuts into. Yours are considered spinning reels, very rarely any issues with braided lines on them except the occasional slippage on the spool.

My Bad! I read spincaster with my eyes, but interpreted spinning reel with my brain. Haven't used a spincaster since they made the Zebco 66. Braided line at that time referred to Dacron or nylon. I have a Zebco 33 for my grandaughter. May have to put some PP on it to see what happens.

Hi Delmuts:

When I was guiding I used both Daiwa (Goldcast series) and Zebco (Omega series) closed face Spincast reels with PP. Mainly for clients that were uncomfortable with spinning or bait-casting equipment. I never had any problems with the pick-up pins being damaged. But once or twice I did have the braid bury into the spool on a big fish, when the drag was to tight. If I remember correctly the Zebco had a 3-pin pick-up system, which worked very nicely with braid.
