Converting an 8 x 12 perm to a wheel house

I did a 6x8 a few years ago. Used 2x3 steel tubing on the frame and put 2 inch angle on top of that to bolt the house too. Never a problem. Remember though, if you do an 8x12 you will be over width unless you box in the wheels. That will be a lot of work but still possible.

the main problem you are going to have is the wheel system you can't just add the wheels to your skid house because you will be over the legal width for the road. I think it would be more work than its worth better off finding a wheel house and selling your skid house or build one from the ground up

Good Luck

It can be done, but it is a lot of work and you will have to figure out where you have to put the wheel wells in the house, and figuring out what the best location for the wheel placement would be for the optimum tongue weight so it will tow correctly.

Another thing to think about is how is this skid house built and how tall is it? Does it have a gable roof or a flat roof? These are few things that will make it tow like carp, have you ever carried a full sheet of plywood on a windy day, if its to tall it will tow like that. How heavy is it? you would be surprised how heavy a house like that is, depending on how its built it could way more than a ton. I had a 8x16 that was just over tons.

These are things you will need to know for axle size and the possibility of having to install electric brakes on it.

If you are out in the country and only plan on moving the shack a couple times a year (not down state highways), put the wheels on the outside.

We did it for years and never had a problem. Even if a cop was having a bad day, whats he really gonna do? Take away your birthday? grin

Hell, I've dragged a skid house home 4 miles down the road (icy road) and never got any guff over it. Just don't do it down the freeway grin

i agree with b-man I've pulled big houses down the road that were 9'6 never been bothered even pulled down state highways but would not recommend it though

and how you do the axle depends on what your starting with wood skid frame or steel I've done both next is it going to get lot of miles on it

We've been pretty lucky over the years with over width houses but I think with the huge numbers of them there is getting to be they will start watching closer. God forbid a couple fatal accidents happen and they clamp down, then you've done a lot of work for nothing. There are a lot of rookies that have never pulled much weight running huge houses now.

Miltona blacksmith is who you want to contact. we had an 8x12 skid house that we dropped on a frame they built for us. works great! I think it was about 1400 for the custom size. the lake we take it to is just a few miles down a gravel road so not concerned about being too wide.

What if your involved in a accident? i would not want that on my mind via a lawsuit! Be responsible and think of others please!
