question on boots

Recommended Posts

Need some opinions. I got a very nice pair of boots for christmas. I wore my last pair out. I am a very avid pheasant hunter from the beginning of the season until the end. I received a pair of Irish Setter Gunflint 1000 gram boots. I'm concerned that this is way to warm of a boot for upland hunting. I have never bought any insulated boots before because I didn't think it was needed for bird hunting, because I'm constantly on the move and have never had cold feet. What do you guys think??? Are these too much boot for what I need??? I'm very grateful, I know these are very high quality and expensive boots, but I'm afraid come next october my feet might melt off!!! I'm not a deer hunter any longer, so all I need are boots for pheasant hunting. Thanks for your opinions and advice!!! Hope you all had a good holiday and santa was good to you all!!!

I think your intuition is right, those 1000 gram boots will be too hot for the early season. I have a couple pair, one uninsulated and the other ones 1000 gram boots, I don't wear the heavy ones bird hunting until it gets colder than 15 degrees.

I've never worn insulated boots for bird hunting. I've simply used varying levels/types of thermal socks for the insulation I needed when it got cold. You could use those boots for specialty situations. If the boots are heavy though, I would go in a different direction. Heavy boots are a buzzkill.

I know everyones feet are different, but I wore a pair of uninsulated boots with Smartwool socks on a late season rooster hunt in ND this year with temps between -10 and -21. Never got cold feet.

My vote is if you are a 1 pair of boots guy, trade them in. Not sure how much my vote counts though.....??? grin

I vote for 2 pairs uninsulated for warm days and either roomier uninsulated boots or up to 400 gram insulation. I picked up a nice pair of setters 400 grams last spring. I used to never use insulated boots. However, I discovered this year when it's below about 30 degrees very little snow melts on the outside of my boots keeping the leather dryer and the boots lighter than my non insulated boots in the same conditions. I don't hardly use 1000 grams ice fishing. Those boots would too wet with sweat on my feet.

I have a leather pair of rocky boots that have 800 grams of insulation....I used these in iowa on pheasant hunting trips and I think they are great...I think the leather boots are tougher than the fabric style boots. I have another pair like those that I hunt grouse in just because they are lighter...I always wear the leather when walking through corn stubble etc. they are good and warm also......hope this helps

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
