sunniewally
Wow!! finally got enough ice to try my nice new nils hand auger everybody says are so great. Most depressing event of my life. It is by far the worst piece of junk i ever used to cut a hole in the ice in over 50 yrs of ice fishing. can get enough down pressure to make it thru 5 in ice using a drill forget by hand. my advice if you get the urge to try a hand auger and drill don't get a nils!!!!!!!!!!! Surface Tension
I have to ask. Are you drilling in Forward. There is obviously something wrong with the blade. Could have been you or someone abused it and returned it, who knows. Check your PMs
Esox_Magnum
you should not put any downpressure on the auger, as Frank stated somethings wrong with the blade... My 8" easily outdrills a 5" Lazer....
sunniewally
yes i am drilling it forward. ya, there is something wrong but i ordered it from C a couple months ago and just got to try it out today. i never saved the box and return slips so i am sol there unless i want to spend a whole bunch more to return it. back to using my sm all the time. sunniewally
is there a difference between the black head vrs the red one? i see on there videos the guy is using the convertible auger with the red head instead of the black one. Northlander
Surely a bad blade. My Nils hand auger is the fastest hand auger I have ever seen in use.
dfeste
Yes there is a difference between the red and black cutting heads. I did a little searching and found some info on another site. Apparently the black cutting head is less aggressive than the red one. I also saw that the red and black heads are interchangeable.
Surface Tension
Correct, the black Nils is a little less aggressive then the red Nils.Reason being that in some soft ice conditions the red Nils might be too much load on the drill. I've talked with guys using both red and black heads and they haven't had a problem using either with a drill. Fact is, if an 18 volt drill can turn a lazer then a red Nils would be no problem. Back to your problem of not cutting. Some guys learn the hard way that you need to take care to not let the blade touch anything but ice and when not cutting put the guard on.That is true for any shaver type auger blade. hamms-scooter
I wouldn't be to discouraged about it. Get it sharpened. There wouldn't be this many guys talking about it if they were junk... Help yourself out and send it to frank. Like you said you have it now.
dfeste
Best bet would be to follow the above advice and send the head to Frank. I can tell you from experience that he does a great job and the blade will come back sharper than new. I have heard other complaints in the past about people getting bad cutting heads from Cabelas. It's possible the angles are off right from the factory. Either way Frank can get you set back up for about $20 plus shipping.

Portlis
I just figured I'd add my 2 cents to this thread.I bought a nils 6" convertible hand auger this fall and just had a chance to try it out tonight for the first time.My expectations were relatively high given the crazy amounts of praise for them....and my expectations were still blown away. I can't imagine needing a gas auger ever again. I only needed to drill about 5 holes, but I drilled those 5 holes as fast or faster than any gas auger I've ever used. I'm sure the limiting factor for the drill is simply the quantity of holes you can drill due to it being battery powered.... but still. I even brought my drill battery home and stuck it on the charger and it said it was still completely full after those 5 holes. I like to hole hop every now and then, but I don't need to drill 100 holes in a day. Not only that, but the auger is incredibly light and easy to carry. Throw a cordless drill in a backpack and carry it out on to the ice and you're fishing in no time. It's rare for me to be completely happy with a product, and with this auger I 100% am. Did you ever sharpen the blades on your gas auger or were using one from 1965?
pheasantpete
Nils are nice augers. So are strike master lazers. Question for nils owners can you sharpen the blade yourself or is it a throw away like lazers. Lazers are so hard to resharpen when you trade them in with strikemaster/iceforce in Big Lake they just toss them but give a bulk pack set at a discounted price. pheasantpete
Next obvious question are Nils blades easy to find like strikemaster lazers?

Surface Tension
pheasantpete, Don't throw your Nils blades away. Click the link in my signature or email me.I'm authorized by Nils Master to sharpen their blades. What does "authorized" mean. Obviously I have the equipment and know how to sharpen a Nils blade. That isn't enough though. The Nils head is blade and mount. I have to be able to reshape a blade and mount. Can you sharpen your own Nils? Better question is could I sharpen one without the proper equipment? Maybe a few if the blade had a minor blemish but not likely. I do get a fair number of blades that the owner attempted to sharpen. In every case that just compounded the damaged. If you try it just don't touch the bottom of the blade and don't use a knife sharpener. New Nils blades are easy to find if you plan ahead otherwise no, you won't walk into any store and buy one.
