Genz box/ Flasher Mod's

I like the idea of having the 898 on the genz box I have been tossing around that idea for awhile now with my 998. I am trying to think of you I want to mount it on the pickup, drilling as few holes as possible.

Any ideas?

I used to just put the 898 on the dash with the gps puck and run my battery cord to a 9ah battery on the floor.

I added a ram mount ball to the back of my blue box that my 898 is mounted on. I put a ram mount on my otter sled too. Now, when the ice gets thicker and i start driving, i'll just put it on the seat next to me in the truck. The gps works fine through vehicle roofs typically. The other idea would be to put a ram in the truck to attach to the blue box, but that's probably not necessary.

Here's a pic attached to my sled.

Can't really see the ram on the sled because the rattle reel is in the way.

I bought an elite 5 ice machine to replace my trusty x67c and this thing is great. I love the graph mode and how you can dial it in coupled with the GPS capability. The ability to split the screen and have your maps and waypoints alongside the graph mode is going to be fun to play around with.

What is the best mapping to get? I had navionics on my iPhone but just traded that for an android phone this weekend and my guess is that I cannot transfer to the droid app so am I better off doing something with the elite 5?

I have the last supported version of the Lakemaster MN chip, the Navionics Platinum and the 2012 Lowrance Lake Insight chip. The Lakemaster chip ONLY has MN and some border waters (not Rainy or LOW) in detail on that chip, while Navionics and the Lowrance chips have them in detail.

IMO after comparing them side by side, if you were a fan of Lakemaster, go with the Lowrance Chips as they are identical with the exception of having MORE on them. The Navionics chip is perfectly good to and actually has some better coverage into Canada than the Lowrance Chip, which does go well into Canada in High Detail, but abruptly cuts off with NO DETAIL whereas the Navionics actually has key structure details, hazards and navigation routes, but not in High Detail.

Here's my custom Vexi. Thanks for the RAM mount idea! Old school ProPack1 but new. Old RAM mount I wasn't using, new digital battery status indicator, new battery with a new charger and new foam piece for ducer. Vexilar in Bloomington hooked me up and dug in the back to find the ProPack1 case which they no longer make, but that's what I wanted since I already copied the RAM mount idea I didn't want to copy the Genz box too.

Correct. Then again I didn't look at the propack2 that much. I didn't like the the small tackle box on the base. I guess I'm just used to the propack1 style since that's what I got when I bought it eons ago.

I have been following this thread since it's inception, but I am still failing to see the advantage to a RAM mount other than as a height extension. What am I missing? One can still angle it up and down on the gimbral (sp?) mount, and turn it side to side but twisting the whole setup. I would like more height, but my LX5 bag would be the limiting factor. Setting it on a milk carton or kitty litter bucket would get you height and something to haul it in if needed.

It's all about having fun creating something from nothing. That's really it. Ram mounts are nice, because you can remove the unit on a dime and adjust it pretty easily by loosening the little knob.

Looks sharp Nisswaguy.

As far as McGurk's comment. We're dorks. OK I'll speak for myself but yeah fishin dorkisum is a disease I've had since about 6 yrs old. It really took hold when I was 12 and caught a large pike that made my knees shake off a dock in Twin Lake. (probably a 7 lber but hey I was 12) It's been downhill ever since. I believe I caught this disease from my dad.

Hey Truth-

I've tried to make your PVC rod holders you have on your mod. I've tried 1" and 1 1/4" PVC and each are pretty stiff and hard to slide a rod and reel in and out of. Actually, the 1" was too small. The 1 1/4" was big enough, but was pretty hard to use. What size did you end up using?

How are you guys liking the big open water units out on the ice? How long does the standard size battery last?

If anyone has a picture of what suspended crappies (ice fishing) look like, I would love to see what that looks like on these big graphs.

Pros and cons versus standard ice flashers would be interesting to hear too.

With a graph you have a few seconds of history. If you take your eyes off for a bit you could see a mark that you might have otherwise missed. If you have a crappie or other fish suspended under you it will appear as a line going across the screen. A fish rising off bottom then going back down would show up as an arch. As soon as a fish swims into the cone angle of your transducer a line will start on the right hand side of your screen at whatever depth it's swimming at, and that line will continue across the screen as history. The right side of the screen (where fish first show up) is actually what is under you at that moment.

The battery on my unit with GPS lasts like 6 hours but my battery is old also. A new battery has lasted all day. These units will slow down in really cold weather hole hopping but in a shelter their fine, plus the added benift of haveing a GPS is great.

does anyone happen to have an older genz box or any type of flasher mount they would be interested in getting rid of? I am going to start bringing my Elite 5 with for GPS, probably wont use it as a flasher since i still have the LX7 but having it in the truck for gps would be great... if anyone has anything that they are willing to part with please pm me.

Playing in the garage a bit, and rigged this up with some 1/8" x 1" aluminum bar stock. Obviously stealing from an established product, but modded it to work with my sled. I added some switched LED lights on the bottom of the front bracket that aren't able to be seen, but I still have some tweaking to do with cable management and connections. I also need to put something in the bottom of the lower bucket to keep the battery to the back so it isn't as front heavy and tippy.

I use a Frabill Recon that I mounted a Frabill Shuttle onto, and then remounted the tent on top. Didn't add much weight and is pretty handy. I needed my flasher bracket shorter than the Ice Hopper hangers to accommodate the Shuttle decking. I am looking into adding a Aqua Vu Micro Plus to this setup, too.
