Boca bearings upgrade

Sorry if this is a repeat. Upgraded the bearings in my Citica E tonight. Followed a you tube video. Seemed to go pretty well. The spool seems to spin like a mad man. Going to try it on the lake on Tuesday. Anyone try these before. Seems like a decent way to get some more miles out of a older reel.

I just put Boca ABEC 5 ceramic lighting hybrids in a Citica, a Revo Winch, two Curados and a Cruxis. After a lot of research I decided to install them dry as supplied. They are a bit noisy but spin like mad! FYI- I bought them in a 10-pack for $69.95 with free shipping. The part number for the 10-pack is SKU: #FTP103C-YZZ#5LD

Then I cleaned up the old Shimano 3x10x4mm bearings (actually very high quality bearings) and put them on the left plate in my old Quantums. I bought some Boca SS 3x8x4 (tensioner) and 5x11x4 (right plate)to replace the other Quantum bearings. Some of the Quantum bearings have a plastic race which makes it really hard to clean them with acetone. All the bearings for the Quantum got one little drop of Hot Sauce. I leave the shields off for easy cleaning and re-oiling every year.

How did you decide between abec5 vs 7's. I thought the performance would be better than it was. Fun to tinker tho. My Curados cast great. Don't know if it's worth adding the Boca's to these. Thanks for the feedback. I put mine in dry as well. A little noisy, but not a big deal.

My research found that 5s were just as good as 7s unless you are talking about pitching very light baits.

My Curados were fine. The Shimano bearings come full of grease. If you flush them and lightly oil they are just great. But, my Quantums needed new bearings, so I did what I did.

If I can get 5' more on a cast it's a win for me.

Some good info here from CHM...

A lot of stock bearings are actually not bad, but in a lot of cases new reels tend to be over-lubed. Abus are terrible for it in fact. There can definitely be too much of a good thing with oil and grease. In a lot of cases you can get just as much performance out of cleaned and properly (i.e., lightly) lubed stock bearings as you can with upgraded bearings. I've run bearings dry too, but the chatter bugs me for some reason.

I do upgrade some reels with new bearings. It doesn't make a huge difference but it can be noticeable in some cases.

You can definitely get carried away with upgrading reels, but...it's something to do during the off season.

In some circles you're just not cool unless you "super-tuned" everything and installed Orange Seals! LOL

The guys that see the huge improvement after sending their reels in probably only needed to flush and lightly oil their existing bearings. They could have saved a huge amount of cash. I almost fell for the myth until I did a bit of research.

I read a post on a bass forum by a reel repair sponsor. He said the stock Shimano bearings are very good, but some guys insist that they want them replaced with Orange Seals. So he does that, then uses the old stock bearings in his own reels.

RK nailed it! We have lots of time to clean up our tackle and work on rods and reels this time of year.

I talked to a shimano reel designer once, and have talked to many of the repair guys at mother shimano. I was told that for the most part spools are too heavy to actually gain any advantage at all from higher end replacement bearings.

If you have one going bad, by all means replace it, but I have yet to have a problem with stock.

Must remember some people are enthusiast and will be willing to fork out money for very little gain or bling. In in hobby or passion, you can always spend a bit more to get more refinement or style. Some may not understand the concept but for some enthusiast knowing and feeling good about their gears makes fishing more fun. Like anything in life, if you are happy with it then it was worth it.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
