Cyberfish
Ok frustrated here, I love love love my Tanaka motor for drilling the ice. i am not so fond of the Nils drill bit that came with it. I had a friend make me a nice adapter that screws right on to the threads on the motor, that would allow me to change augers with ease. Now i only have one thing in my way. A small adapter for the nils bit is fastened onto it now so tight I have had three friends try to remove it without success. I would pay someone it they could somehow remove it for me lol, I know I would hate to have to buy another motor just to do this!!!!! Thanks! cps420us
Are they left handed threads?
magicstix
Not left handed threads. I can't say I've had a stuck one, mine all have come right off. Are you able to take a chisel and hammer and give it a couple good whacks to shock it loose. May take 2 people to do this, one to hold drill, one the hit it. ice_medic
Try soaking it in penetrating oil for a day and then adding some heat to it. That seems to work good for us when stuff stuck together like that.
Lusid
Penetrating Oil or Heat might be your 2 non destructive options.
Cyberfish
Thanks for the tips. I believe all those have been tried. I really don't wan't to be stuck buying a new powerhead I got a nice little thorne brothers finesse plus ice rod to give to anyone around the cities that can fix this without damaging anything. anyone wanna try? Corey Bechtold
I could try it one more time but I wanted your approval to grind the adapter down to the threads. Then I could chisel the adapter off. I would have tried more heat but I don't want to wreck the seal on the bearings...Later,Corey Bechtold
Cyberfish
yeah you have my approval as long as you think it wont damage the threads. if the seal is damaged it can be replaced, right? I can give it to Lawrence next week, if you want to try again
bee
Do you have the wrench that comes with the Nils adapter. If so and you have a nice vice clamp the wrench in the vice. Set the motor shaft in it and use a pipe wrench on the adapter. You may be able to get an extension pipe over the wrench handle. The wrench could even be tack welded to the vise for more support. The shaft on the power head has about an 1/8 in of unthreaded shaft. The adapter needs to have a counter bore in the end of it or a washer to placed between to keep the shaft threads from bottoming out. hamms-scooter
I hope you can get that adapter off without damaging your power head. I ended up buying a tanaka as well Mike I am thinking of using anti seize on the threads along with a washer to keep it from bottoming out. I am going to run a mora on mine before I go out and buy nils drill.
DTro
Getting tired of the slush or having to sharpen the cutting head so often? Keep in mind that the auger and blade are kind of a match set on the Nils. You might experience sub par performance if you put another auger/cutting blade on that powerhead

The Mora was hands down easier and better to drill with. With the shorter height and less weight it makes a super hole drilling run and gun rig. It fits in a small jet sled.Granted you have to take a second to get the Mora drilling. But a slow speed start sets it nice.

So spraying some PB Blaster and letting it soak for an hour or longer didnt work eh? Maybe some sort of claw or clamp on puller may work similar to a break drum puller? Don't put a Lazer bit on your Tanaka as it will eat away from your gears faster. The auger bite is just to aggressive. That is why a mora is a better choice. You'll have to have someone make an adapter to do so. The mora is slower but considering that its a lot less slush to remove makes it faster!! magicstix
I've been running a 6" lazer on a used Tanaka for about 6 or 7 years with no problems.
Cyberfish
I think for most people a 6 inch lazer would be fine. The guy we know that burns out a tanaka might be "a little" harder on his augers, and drill a "few" more holes than most!
RJMOEN
Can someone post more info or pm me about the adapter needed for a mora on tanaka. I absolutely love my tanaka.....the drill is ok but I run through sand a lot and it murders the bit. I have an 8" nils and a 4" nils, keep thinking about selling the set and buying something else that can run through sand and stuff. Id rather sell my 8" bit and keep the 4" for when I do "extreme" hole hoping.... Thanks!!
Cyberfish
I will show you mine if I can ever get it on lol. A friend made it for me, but he is in Michigan...
