This Bug Bugs me!! What?

Over past several days we have found some large bright green bugs around our house in the woods. They look sorta like a grasshopper and have a large, very predominant shiny black eye. They are lethargic when we find them and appear to be expiring. Have never seen them before and ten years at this cabin.

What?

I think what you are finding are known as Katydids (sp?). They are very pale green...almost translucent. Long broad transparent wings, and long antenae? They usually move very slowly when walking, and yes, they resemble a very bright green grasshopper.

A Cicada is actually a "true bug" if I'm not mistaken, identified by it's mouth parts. Cicada's are more flat and oblong shaped, and yes, multi-colored. They look a little more like a moth laying on a flat surface.

Oops. Yep that's it. Pics posted while I was typing my post. smile

The cicada above is pale green and semi-translucent because this pic shows one that is just emerging from it's earlier stage (the "cocoon" it's holding onto that looks like another bug). It will eventually turn many mottled colors.

The Katydid shown actually looks to be a pretty mature critter, with it's solid coloration.

You bug hunters are dead on right-we are finding newly hatched cicadas....and only a few at that. We have been in this cabin for ten years and have never seen them before.

As a fly fisherman I generally can get a handle on "bugs" but I have never seen a cicade before and perhaps they are not indigenous to Alaska and Montana, my former habitats.

Thanks fellas, appreciate the help. We are going to watch to see how things progress.
