Boat/Trailer size question

Lunker

Question

Folks,

Currently planning on swapping out my 12 ft flatbottom for a 14ft flat. Would like to keep my trailer if possible. Currently the trailer extends about 2 inches longer than my 12ft. So if I made the switch it would extend close to 2 ft out past the trailer. Would this be okay or would I need to extend out the runners? The only problem I could think is the weight of the motor that much farther back might cause a bit more force causing some point of contact to wear more...

Thanks

There has to be some sort of relationship between the location of the axle and how things work. I don't know what the formula or relationship or whatever it's call is. But you can't simply add 2 feet to the trailer and not have some sort of change happening. Can you experiment with your current boat by moving it back the two feet and see what happens with the tongue? I suppose that there could be a hundred or maybe more weight on the front if you had the new boat in place but trying it could be informative. If you do it be sure you put something under the back so the motor doesn't hit the ground if it tips up.

You have a two ft difference in boat lengths. You will have to move your winch ahead 1ft, and extend you bunkers 1ft forward and 1ft back from their current locations. Otherwise you are going to run into a weight distribution problem. Also make sure your trailer springs are rated for the increased load.
