auger394
Is it dangerous to charge 12volt batteries inside fish house with a car battery charger? Thanks.
TruthWalleyes
Not more than normal. Be sure to hook up the battery properly to avoid sparks. As the battery heats up and charges gasses can be released and easily ignited. I've had a 12v battery blow up in my face before. I'm lucky i can see. All that was left of the battery was the base and 2 posts. Pieces scattered for 20yds. I cringe everytime i hook up to a battery.
Mid-Lake Rock
Truth:I want details. How did it happen? I'm curious because I never want that to happen near my face. Thanks.
TruthWalleyes
Needed to jump start the old man's oliver which was hooked up to an auger during harvest a few years ago. I run to the shop, grab jumpers and a battery. I put the battery on top of the oliver at head height. Hook up jumpers to dead battery, hook up cables to other battery...boom. Immediately walked toward the hydrant and about the time the burn made me start waking faster I took my right hand and was feeling for fingers on my left hand. I had no feeling I'm my left hand but everything was there... Washed my face and eyes out good. I can still remember that shockwave feeling and the total loss of sensation immediately after. Dad was on other side of farm standing next to a loud tractor and auger. I walked over to him and said, did you hear that? He thought I shot a shotgun - told him what happened. We couldn't believe what we saw when we found the battery. Crazy. Lucky.Had to toss all my clothing. Surprisingly my carhartt survived minus the cuffs. No other injuries besides left ear hearing reduced. I've sparked hundreds of times on batteries since. Been lucky i guess. BTW, the real kicker was earlier that day dad was charging that battery. It could have been severely overcharged, possibly overfilled, who knows-it's a farm battery.Moral, hook up batteries in proper fashion. Google how to jump a battery
kapp
sealed batteries ok to charge, the unsealed ones can emit gasses while charging, so fresh air is better
