oil life monitoring system

Recommended Posts

I have a 2011 Acadia and I was wondering how accrete they are. The manual sad that it runs on condition of oil not miles. I run mobile 1 and around 4000 miles it tells me I need to change the oil. I have been using this oil for 20 years and change oil around 10000 miles. I should add all the miles are highway miles.

Although you are probably fine going further with highway miles, If there is any remaining warranty involved, using synthetic does not give you the option of extending your intervals. Variable valve timing on todays engines places more demands on engine oil and can be very sensitive to extended intervals so stretching it out is not really in your best interest.

I personally use the oil monitor system on my vehicles and end up at 4000 to 4500 miles per change.

Harvey I have a few questions, have you kept any vehicle that you followed this procedure long enough that any negative effects would have showed up and second how long of a time frame might there be between your changing the . I ask because of low mi. I put on I follow the time frame mentioned in the owners manual of not going over 12 months between oil changes. I also use full synthetic. Thanks

If you have a newer VCT(Variable Valve Timing) engine, I would follow the owners manual, or even before what the manual says. If your engine isnt a VCT engine, then the longer intervals shouldnt effect to much.

I recently "in the last two months" read of the properties of modern day oils and that artical said todays oils have twice the life of the 90s oils. They had change reccomendations for different driving habits.I wont get into it I may be mistaken?? You may try to google.

I have a 2008 Chev P/U. I have owned it since 38,000 miles and it now has 209,000 on it and uses zero oil between changes, well, maybe uses a half quart to be truthful.

I change it about every 3-4 months. How many miles between, maybe 11-13,000.

I use Mobil 1 oil in this truck and have used Mobil 1 in my last 3-4 vechiles and I have run them all up to approx 200,00 or a tad more. Had a 1979 T Bird I took to almost 250,000 miles chnaging about every 10,000 miles. That car as far as I know ran for another 3 years until that guy sold it to another.

I have also done the same type oil changes on a 2003 PT cruiser and that now has 189,000 miles on it and uses approx a pt of oil between changes.

Most all of our vechiles get to or darn close to 200,000 and I have yet to have a engine issue internally except for 1. Highest mileage was a 1984 Suburban we took to 274,000 miles but that one broke a crank.

With all that said, most of our miles are hwy miles and not short trip miles.

If you have an engine like Scott stated, then I would do as he suggested. We have not owned one of those motors so I cannot speak for those.

You can also try searching Google for problems with VCT engines, being sludged up, and having to replace the engines at about 50,000 miles or less, because of not changing oil when recommended.

I can roughly parallel Harvey's experience. I have a 94 Chev K1500 that I've been driving since new. It's been run on synthetic, primarily Amsoil, since 500 miles. On the Amsoil I ran as high as 20K miles between changes but mainly 10-15k, with the filter roughly every 5k being as tiny as it is on the 4x4 trucks. The truck now has 220k(? - don't drive it unless I need to these days) but still runs like a top and uses no oil to speak of (the same as Harvey's). It has had synthetic transmission fluid in the tranny and transfer case and synthetic gear oil in the front and rear diffs too since very low miles. Too bad the rust is getting it. The engine oil now gets changed once per year since I hardly drive it.

As far as the original question, when I had dino oil in my newer Impala I went by the oil life monitor and ended up in that same 4000-4500 range mentioned earlier. Last change I did myself using Mobil 1 Extended Service oil and plan to leave it two cycles, or about 9000 miles.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
