Lowrance lcx-27c settings for Airmar P66BL

Fur Fish and Feathers

Question

After much trouble with Lowrance's Skimmer transducer, I opted to replace it with an Airmar P66BL. I had it on the water this weekend and it performed very well, with the exception of the speed sensor. I'm not sure it's a big deal as I get speed from the GPS as well but it's kind of the principle of paying for something that doesn't work, if in fact it doesn't work. I played around with a couple different transducer settings and still couldn't get the speed to straighten out. The unit fluctuates between 30-130mph, when I'm trolling at 2-3mph. I've installed software version 2.5.0 on the Lowrance and there are several Airmar units in the transducer type list, but not the P66 (I tried the P79 and B60). I'm curious if anyone else has this setup and how they have it configured?

I got sick of lowrances crappy transducers and loosing bottom I purchased the airmar ducer this spring and I will say well worth the 129$ I spent it has never lost bottom and what a ducer... the only change I really had to make with mine was with the old ducer I had sensitivity turned all the way up to 100 just to try and read bottom I now have sens tuned down to like 76%...as for speed ive never had problem as I would never use the wheel which can be off either way by 5-10mph the gps speed is the best way to go all the time..i don't know any reason u would turn that off and use the wheel.. I luv my airmar and would recommend anybody having ducer issues with lowrance to switch and see the difference

The speed sensor is a separate unit than the tranducer itself, you didnt get both did you?

I never even installed the wheel on my boat because they never work that well, get hung up with debris, etc.

If the speed you are seeing is from the GPS unit itself (ie Speed Over Ground) and it fluctuates like that I would suspect that its related to your GPS receiver getting eratic signals as to your position. The way the GPS calculates speed is by distance traveled since the last "update". So if you are not getting the best lock, you can get varying results. That model has an external puck GPS correct? Perhaps its that which is causing the problem. Perhaps due to its location getting interference by something else or just going bad. Im guessing its an LGC 2000? Settings for your transducer wouldnt fix either of these problems based on what I think is causing it.

The unit has the speed sensor (paddlewheel). I'm pretty sure you can get the p66 with or without and the 30-130mph readings being displayed are coming from the speed sensor not the gps.

Upon my first inquiry with GEMECO they suggested "use the B744 as it has the same circuitry, only that it is a through hull instead of a transom mount unit." When I informed them that's not an option in the transducer type menu they suggested "use the THST-DFBL as that refers to the Airmar B744 which is the same as the P66 other than how it mounts."

I also had inquired directly with Airmar and they suggested "If the P66 option is not available, you can use: Generic 50/200 kHz 600W 5k."

I think I tried "Generic 50/200 kHz" but I'm not sure. I'll try the "THST-DFBL" and then "Generic 50/200 kHz" this weekend and see what happens.

Do you guys happen to know what transducer type setting you're using?

I agree given one or the other, gps speed is the way to go. There are times, especially river fishing, where it's useful to know how fast the water is moving under me (gps speed - transducer speed).

OK, so you have the paddlewheel and that is what you were getting the odd readings from, changing the "transducer type" wont fix your problem.

As to your question about what setting I use, its the generic 83/200. I do not have an AirMar though and I have HDS units.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
