Weed edge question

Recommended Posts

When you guys are locating a weed edge to fish what does the weed edge consist of? Does it start to thin out and you fish that or are you looking for an abrupt stop to the weeds like a wall almost? I have only ever seen it whens weeds start to thin out but im fairly new to si and di. Also what other features

Would make one weed edge better than the other?

I'm just regurgitating what others have said, but you want to look for unique areas on the weed edge. These would include points, inside turns, vegetation changes, weed next to rock or hard bottom, weeds adjacent to deep water, etc.

Variation will attract fish to these areas. You can either use your electronics or a crankbait/jig worm to find these spots and then drop a waypoint.

I look for the coontail that's out past the milfoil edge. Milf will grow to such and such depth, but after that the coontail should be down there for a few feet then stop. Most of the time I find them in the coontail or edge of it, but sometimes they will be in the Milf or between the to. Every time is different

Instead of focusing on kinds of weeds, I first will look at where the weeds are in relation to the shore. Weed beds adjacent to some good shore structure will be good for me up until after summer peak, then Ill start looking at the other side of them on deeper water or those beds more off of main lake structure. Then start picking apart the inside, outside, what these guys already mentioned types of things.

Then again I love me some jigging so I am usually always looking for some depth. grin

a lot will depend on weather and time of day too.. as more sun is hitting the water and less wind, the bass will pull up tighter in the weeds and not so much the edge, yet in low light situations and or windy, they may be more edge based as well.

The main thing you looking for some sort of difference. Something that is not the norm for the lake.

As always for me there needs to be deep water nearby so that wall weedline would be a good starting place, then look for the darkest area, dock close to the water, thick patch of weed, boat lift what ever. Just a good ambush spot. Just remember it is easier to see from a dark area in to light then it is to see from a lighted area into the dark. Dark to light = ambush. I do not fish for numbers. I'm looking for 18" or bigger fish.
