I wanted to ask about these shrooms also. From what I gather from images and other posts, they look like oysters. Don't take that to the bank as I am wary of any shroom ID other than morels and hens.

sure look like oysters to me, but you have to identify them yourself..

oysters if you are going to preserve them are best cooked then frozen.

Be sure to only eat oysters picked off of hardwoods, ones taken off pine or other evergreen can give you a stomach ache.

I suggest you get a mushroom identification book.

I haven't looked for anything except morels in years but I was told to do a spore test to identify things I was unsure of. We would place the mushroom on a clean sheet of paper for a time and see what color the spores were.

As far as I know there has never been an issue in hundreds of years in North America, not really anywhere else either until, as mentioned, in Japan a few years back, but only with some older people with kidney issues. Something funky going on that particular season in Japan or cause for concern here....can't really say. My completely unscientific take on it is that it was probably something having to do with the "lichenny" type stuff they fed off of that year. Don't have a lot of conifers around me, so have never seen one, so don't really know what I would do. Don't think it is that highly regarded for taste though, but would still probably try it ....just because grin Odds of winning the lotto are probably better than dying from eating one wink
